Hello
I am in great need of comfort right now.My Oliver fell out of his cage last night my own stupid fault momentary lapse in care.He seemed ok bit stunned and snuffly but settled with cuddles. We checked him over and he did not seem in pain just bit coughy. This settled and his little lip was bit swollen. His teeth are snapped and i felt awful.
He came in last night and made attempts to eat and did have some crushed cucumber and hay.He had calpol and overall seems ok just be snuffly.
I checked him this morning and he was normal chirpy self just cant eat properly he can walk fine is popcorning and struuting his stuff around Mrs Oliver as normal ! Jaw feels fine and he is going through the motions of eating.
I have felt awful today very weepy as i love all my piggies so much i cant believe i was so careless.
He is going the vets tonight for check up as i was worried if he had swallowed tooth chip ?:0:0:0:0:0
Any advice welcome
Helen -Bad owner :(

Helen, you are not a bad owner. Much of the time, the pigs themselves are to blame! Some pigs just do silly things and lack the caution that most pigs have. :)) Even some of the most experienced of owners have/had an incident like this at some point. The point is, you will learn from it and adjust things slightly to make extra sure it won't happen again.

His teeth will grow in again very quickly, probably within the week. The fact that he is eating and otherwise well is great news. *Personally* I wouldn't worry too much about whether he swallowed a bit of tooth, it is not often the missing chip of a tooth is found so it could be assumed that many pigs swallow these tiny bits. Good luck at the vets for his checkup.

And big hugs to you! x

dont be daft hel your not a bad owner god you spoil ** guineas accidents do happen chear up and have a look at the new shelties in my thread.....they were born in the night..he will be fine :):)

My Mimsi has broken several teeth due to falls caused by him leaping out of my arms. The teeth have always grown back fine. Oliver has probably forgotten about the incident already. Dont feel bad. It happens to the most experienced of owners.

things like this happen...
My Piglet fell out of her hutch..my stupid fault...she fell about 3ft but onto the folded double buggy that I keep in the shed, she slid down the cover onto the floor..I was very shocked becasue I didn't realise till the next day.So she had been running around the shed floor all night!
But she is alright no injuries thankfully...you piggy maybe a little shocked......we BOTH need to remember to LOCK THE DOOR.....I bet there are alot of us that have done the same thing!xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>

things like this happen occasionally! obviously he is a nosy little pig and likes to go exploring!

I felt awful when cyclopse (named by my brother lol.. after we rescued a guinea pig with one eye), a really timid, nervous piggie leapt out of my hands as i tried to put her back in the cage. she jumped, and fell against the side of the cage at the top, and cut just under her eye.

I was terrified that i'd cut the actual eye and that she would be blind forever, and so i rang the vets straight away in floods of tears and raced down there just before they closed (just before 7pm, phew lucky!) the vet examined her and gave her some eye drops, and then identified that the cut was just below the eye, and no damage to the eye itself had been done.

but when something like that happens you feel awful, and you assume the worst but when you look back, its not all that bad. But you learn to create a safer environment which in the long run makes you a more experienced piggie person. the vet advised me to lower the pigs backwards into the cage, so they can't see that their home is close and attempt to leap. it works wonders, and a similar accident has never occured since!

you're not a bad piggie owner, and the fact that you feel so bad and that you're doing everything you can to make him well again clearly shows how much you care for your piggies!

One of my Guinea Pigs fell from where he was living smashed himself onto a radiator and hit the floor. He's fine by the way he did that a few months back, a ferret has also had a hold of him twice, wow that made me mad when I walked to his cage and found a ferret with its jaws around my piggies head and neck. I cut my self getting its mouth off of him. But....as I said he's fine things happen he's almost three years old now and no worse off.

The Guinea Pig all that happened to is in my Avatar, there have been numerous other things too he's a bit accident prone. He has also in the past knocked one of my other Guinea Pigs (Learoy) front teeth out when things got a bit heated one day, he whacked Learoy's head up the side of the cage, the teeth grew back thankfully. Weird behaviour becuse they had been together since birth, just took a dislike to each other and that was that.

Dont worry to much it can happen to anyone,
When we first got introduced to Boris,OH was playing with him on the top of the pen in petshop(we rescue now) and when OH went to pick him up he ran and fell off the edge,he hit the floor and it was quite a height,he ended up with a broken back and due to extra illnesses he incurred while in recovery he was in great pain and had to be PTS :(,OH still blames himself to this day,
you are lucky it was only relatively minor injurys and I'm sure with some extra love and food of course he will be fine, you are a great piggy mum so dont doubt yourself.
Sending many good wishes to Oliver xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Mac fell off the settee a few weeks ago stupid me wasnt watching him properly and hes tried to jump off before:( it happens to us all i hope oliver is ok how did he get on at the vets?

my Finlay has had a few incidents...

He jumped off my hand as a pup onto the kitchen table which is veneered so he went skidding along, fell off the edge onto a padded chair and bounced down to the floor. Result: One broken tooth and a VERY frightened piggy! @)

He tried to jump back into his unopened cage too, a few months later. Result: 2 broken teeth, a dazed piggy and trouble eating for about 4 or 5 days. :{

Also, my Bertie (RIP) jumped out of the sink at bath time, TWICE. ach time landing on the floor with a massive wet THUD but never actually hurting himself... Result: one VERY firghtened owner and a soaked bathroom floor... and a hapier pig for being taken out of the bath early...:))

....Maybe not so bad owner after all x>>>

I think all your worrying and checking with the forum, the vet etc proves you are not a bad owner at all!

I am relieved he is fine. You will probably be surprised at how fast those teeth grow back in!
