Oliver's Neutering Experience.

Hi Everyone,

As you all know I have been planning on neutering Oliver for a long time and I have fiinally got round to booking him in. Looking around the forum I can see that there are more and more threads popping up about people contemplating getting their boars neutered or who have already booked them in for the operation.

I thought it might be a good idea if I created my own thread detailing mine & Oliver's neutering experience for all to see, including updates on the procedure, how its going, post op care, post op problems (although i hope to god there aren't any) and I also want this thread to be a place where people (if they wish) come and join in about their experiences or what they are going through at the minute wih having their boars done.

All updates will be on this thread and added with a date so you can see the timescale etc.

29/07/12-

I have booked Oliver in for Pre-Op bloods, to check for any health problems that could make neutering or his recovery afterwards harder. I feel sick with worry at the thought of him going undder aneasthetic but trust the vets.


31/07/12-

Me and Connor (My OH) have drove to Lydney with oliver in his carry cage for his Pre-Op bloods, we took him in and had a chat with the head nurse about what was going to happen, i was shaking and had tears in my eyes but had myself under control. Or so I thought until they handed me the piece of paper saying I understod the risks of anaesthetics to Oliver.
Boy, did i cry!
They explained they would give hime a 'whiff' of gas to put him under, perform a health check and then attempt to take the bloods from his neck. It would take about 7 minutes but were told we should leave it an hour to allow him to recover.
They took my salad which i had prepared for him because some pigs feel very peckish when coming round form an aneasthetic.
We left and had a walk around town and then after 45 mins ( I couldn't wait any longer) we returned to the vets.

The head nurse who I had talked to on Facebook for months about the procedure brought Oliver in, who was alert but still a little groggy.
The nurse commented on how hungry he was afterwards and was eating within 5 minutes of coming round

She then went on to tell me that they were unable to get bloods from him due to the fact that he has a large ring of fat around his neck, bless him! She said this could relate back to why he has such a strange squeak. i was informed I would not be charged for my visit because they had not been able to give me any results!

I have now booked Oliver in to be neutered on the 10th of August! I will be bringing him in Thursday however because I have work and this is the only time I can take him. Two nights away from me, the thought makes me sad.

Now time to get planning and preparing, I will update you all soon.

can * ask what the benefits of neutering are as i havent notices any problems with my boar ditto? Is it just if * want to keep them with females? Xx

Yes this is the only benefit of nuetering, all it literally does is takes away the ability to re-produce, it does not effect behaviour like it does in cats and dogs, people thinks its calms them down mallethead
