I went to our p@h today, and ended up coming back with a hammy from the adoption section (but thats another story)

I saw they have replaced the informative signs 'must live in groups' etc with new signs.....

My personal favorite says something like 'Pets at Home do not accpet liability for the missexing of animals' Its written on pretty much every glass prison...

so the changes they are making...rather then getting staff that arent total idiots, or retraining them, they are just putting signs up o get themsevles out of the blame of missexing!

That's terrible! Instead of passing the book they should educate their staff that way they wouldn't get the bad name that they do! This is a step backwards in my opinion!

I just couldnt believe it!
to take
AND to top it off, I ended up saying I wanted a syrian hamster that was in the adoption section, you all know the story, tiny, boiling hot glass thing in the crappy adoption section, thats pretty much dark...and the girl said to me...hes from the rescue part, so you make a donation, but you might want to buy him a friend from the other bit.

Its a syrian hampster.... ?

I'm sorry, but how simple do you have to be to think they need 'friends'?

I think she would have tried to tell me it was a girl if he didnt have massive 'boy parts' ::) ;D ;D ;D ;D

Oh dear :o They have now sold us 2 poorly piggies in the last few weeks, both rexes - I think there must be a problem with the breeder. Although they sales people we have talked to do seem to know about g.pigs.. maybe these were problems that couldn't be seen early on, I don't know.

I hate P@H not just for the piggies but also for dog care they are useless, when I was changing the piggies bedding over to vetbed I popped in P@H to have a look,I couldn't see any so asked the assistant asked how much I wanted so I explained how much I would need as I wanted a piece big enough that it could be cut into 2 for when I change the girls cage,I was told I could not use it for piggies as their claws would get caught in it,I explained that shavings are a health hazard to piggies, and she told me it was the safest bedding for piggies, she then told me if I did buy it and something happened to the girls ,not to go back to them and complain, needless to say I bought it off Ebay

Ffs, how long does she think you are going to let your piggies claws yet?? ::) ;D

My P@H hasn't changed there signs, still the same 'must live in groups' one. I'll have to recheck now when i go back next Saturday just to see if they have.

A couple of small local shops have the same signs though, saying there not responsible for any mix sexing, well i never bought from there i tell you ::) ::)

OMG! i would have thought that EVERY ONE, literally knows that you can't keep syrians together, and this is a pet shop employee, who is likely to be the person who gives inexperienced owners their first pieces of advise to start off. You could have ended up with two seriously injured/even dead hamsters. arghh... it makes me soo mad! :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: and those fish tanks that they keep all the small animals in apart from bunnies!however, it's not just them that do that, most of the pet shops here do, it's not right, yet practically everywhere buns get lovely pens and stuff! don't get me started. that sign! i've had first hand experience that they don't correctly sex animals, as i bought 2 gorgeous females (which are definitely) from there and 1 was pregnant, so hey presto! how did that happen then? no, what they should be doing is correctly trainig their staff and improving conditions for the animals, not making stupid signs and covering there a***s. >:( i would have complained only i was worried that they would want the babies back to sell, (i worrry a lot, soppy i know)

My local P@H hasn't changed their signs to that but, they do now have a "small furries shouldn't be handled too many times a week when it is hot as they can get hot and flustered just like we humans" I mean a few times a week? WTH :tickedoff: Probably their excuse for neglecting theirs lol well actually my local P@H is very good... ;)

Our local store has the new glass pens, I really cannot see how they are good for the animals, what about urine fumes?

And regarding Syrian hamsters - I couldn't believe it when I saw a tank with two in and a sign DIRECTLY underneath saying 'must live alone'. Speechless. Needless to say one was pounding the hell out of the other, poor little guy, so I immediately grabbed the first employee and directed them to their own sign and the two fighting animals :-\

Syrian hamsters are always housed together in pet shops, they can be until a certain age before needing split up ;)

I was looking at the rabbits in one of the "tanks" last week and nearly passed out from the fumes. I cannot believe it's allowed and will be contacting their head office yet again about it.

Kezza30 - it only takes a second for an accident to happen. Syrians need to be seperated as soon as they are weaned. My local pet shop (closed about 9 years ago) said the same as you until I pointed out that there was one young syrian happily tucking into the dead body of the cagemate it had killed.

I agree that's just terrible, i just read they can stay together till 8 weeks :-\

I have contacted a member of another forum I use ahd has said this

"Why didn't you ask whilst you were in the store what was going on?

I don't know where this has come from. We've not had anything changed. Even though PAH state they won't take liability for mis-sexing, if something happens we will do everything we can to rectify the situation.

Mis-sexing happens sometimes. Even the most experienced can get it wrong."

Please note this is NOT an official responce, just one of a manager I know

Yesterday when i went into p@h this employee brought a guinea pig indoor cage out of the back with about 5 rats in and these people chose to. But why were they in the back?

They are probably in quarentine :)

I will take some pics of the new signs tomorrow...

And why didnt I ask....because the 3 members of staff that work there I have tried talking to about various things before....the most responce i would get is ' I dont knnoooooooow, do you want fries with that' ::) ;D

It just shows how much p@h have f'd up if they are using signs to cover themsevles! If it didnt happen much, there woudl be no need!

Aparently its a legal thing, they now cannot take responsibility for mis sexing an animal BUT will help if ever such a thing happens

;D

So if they sell an animal that is pregnant, they will offer to take the babies....thats just fantastic ::) ;D

So they will make more money out of the situation...can I just say do they think we are all stupid?

I have to say, thats where I am proud of working at Pets Corner. Apart from the Conures etc we totally guarantee the sex and health of our animals.

We often have animals out the back. Sometimes, we get nervous ones who need some extra tlc, or we sometimes have ones who get poorly or we have some that have been reserved for customers

We do keep syrians together, but we have signs that clearly indicate that certain species must live singly or in groups. The syrians are checked every half hour

Including through the night? It takes seconds for them to kill or severely injure.

Not through the night I admit..but they are only in their groups from the time they come in (5 weeks) up to 6 weeks.
