So my AC is not working, so I got the old store bought cage out of the garage and set it up in the basement. I put a divider in it to separate the two groups and they were fine yesterday and all night. Well I guess today Kristoff got over the fence and attacked poor Olaf! His ear is ripped in two! Kristoff doesn’t have any marks on him and everyone else is fine. Then as I was cleaning off Olaf’s wound, he bit my thumb and drew blood. No hard feelings toward him for that, I’m sure it really hurt! Does he need to see a vet or should I just keep an eye on it?

On a positive note, Sven has maintained his weight since the fluids and is eating and almost back to himself! And we have someone coming to look at the AC in an hour, it’s 85 degrees upstairs!

Oh my goodness, what a time you are having!

I would see a vet as he may need antibiotics to prevent an infection from brewing but in the meantime, you can clean the wound with a homemade saline solution. Mix one pint of cooled boiled water from the kettle with a teaspoon of salt.

I’m glad that Sven is feeling better x

Ok thanks, the vet is going to call to check on Sven today so I can ask him if Olaf needs anything. I have baytril for Sven maybe he’ll tell me to give him that until I can get out there to get some more.

Poor Olaf! That looks very sore. :(

General question: is it actually a good idea to give antibiotics before there's an infection? With antibiotic resistance being a hot topic, is there not a better way to guard against it?

Yeah, I’ve been so worried about Sven, then I was worried about heat strokes and now I have to worry about Olaf! The repair guy came and we need a whole new AC unit (about $5000 I think)! It might take a week and temps are going to be in the 90s all week. My husband is buying two window units, one for the living room and one for the piggy room. It is 88 degrees in here right now (it is 77 where the piggies are in the basement)

I wonder about that too, I’ll ask my vet when he calls

Poor little Olaf!:soz: He is one of my favourite forum piggies! His ear does look very sore:(. I would take him to the vet to get the ear checked out.

Pleased to learn that Sven seems to be on the mend.

$5000 for new AC?:yikes::yikes::yikes: You don't find that down the back of the sofa!

Yeah it is not exactly in the budget, but after sweating all day and the house being a humid steamy 88 degrees all day, I think I’ll pay anything! Luckily my parents live next door, so my kids and I are sleeping here and even though she is allergic, she agreed to let the piggies move in her basement until we get the AC fixed. My girls are so exited to have a sleep over with the piggies, I don’t think they’ll ever go to sleep!

Olaf’s ear looks like it is healing well so far. I got the piggy room cooled off enough to put them back in their big cage which they are very excited about! Sven’s weight is down a little today, but he is very active and wheeked for the first time in two weeks! I think he might have been stressed being in a different cage for a few days. I’ll up the syringe feed and let him eat hay on my lap, he loves that for some reason!

So glad things are improving and that you got some wheeks

I just noticed that Cinderella has a small mark on her ear. So obviously what happened was Kristoff tried to hit on Olaf’s woman and Olaf tried to defend her!42315319-8CCE-4DEF-AA59-6AAD63E5D931.webp

Now I found another wound on Olaf! His poor lip has a big cut! He needs extra cuddles!AB7EDF3D-4448-42A4-B298-004E285D622A.webp93CE6BF3-F523-48FA-B55D-023C27C196AB.webp

Good for Olaf defending his lady! I knew he was lovely this just proves it!:love::love::love::love::love: Just a shame Kentucky is so far away otherwise I'd volunteer to help cuddle him (and I'd make sure I was wearing my jacket with the piggy sized pockets:bal:).

You’re funny! I understand you wanting to piggy-nap him though, he is so adorable and sweet too!
