Well as you know i have 11 piggies well the women who lives behind us next door naghbour breads guinea pigs (this is nothing to do with breading tho) she had 35 guinea pigs and over a 3 week peiod over chritmas thiere all died

something was getting in where she was keeping them and killing them a first thier thought it was rats but somebody told them there is some other kind of animals around where i lives there like rats but a big bigger there begin with M i have never hard of them before but somebody told this women there is a farm around where i live that keep them (not in the same village tho)

anyways this women kept her guinea pigs in a type of green house and there in cages with out roofs on

my guinea pigs live outside in hutches but on a night thier have have a green hutch hugger on then a cutain gose down then 3 layers of pactice sheeting and we put the big wheel bins in fournt of them

and also the cat is outside most of the night know animal gets down my drive when he is outside

i dont think i am going to sleep tonoight now

anywhere this women has 2 more female guinea pigs and is looking for a male she is keeping them in the grage now

where do you live? =S
i can't think of anything like a rat that begins with M and kills guinea pigs, but maybe i'm having a brain blank lol
it's so sad that they all died =[ did it happen all at once or were they killed over a period of time? if it was me and it they were being killed over time i'd move them inside as quickly as i could =[

Such a sad story, but after the 1st few died I am surprised she didnt move the piggies or secure their living area?

I have bolt locks on all my hutches and tarpaulin covers, I have foxes come into my garden, so have to make sure they are secure.

Your piggies sound very safe in their hutches. :))

Why didnt she move them? Sounds pretty irresponsible if you ask me.
She should have secured their living area as soon as she thought there was any threat.

Poor Piggies

i dont why she didnt move then it was the lady who she lives next to who she told and she told me mum as she knows i had guinea pigs and my mum told me

oh and i live in the holmfirth area - thats where last of the summer wine was made it was on bbc1 it is also about 20min or so from where the haret was made aswell
its in huddersfield west yorkshire

my dad is a milkman he gose out 5 morings a week gets up at abouy 4am so he will be able to see if anything got to them anyways he hears the piggies when he is going out of the door

my guinea pigs are in an open area aswell the womons greenhouse thinhy was kinda of hiden behind the grarge and we have lights what come on aswell so my dad can see whaty he doing in the middle of the night

ill be telling the cat to keep an eye on them aswell

Sure to be a mink they are very fierce even my dogs wont approach them. They probably have babies at this time of year so will be bolder than usual and they are pretty bold at any time!

i really really hope you're not saying your pigs are still outside after all of this =[

ok i may soudn stuiped but what do you mean by them being bolder than usual

i anit got anywhere else to put them and when i mean know where i mean know where i cant make space out of thin air its ok you saying put them in side i anit got no where to put 5 big hutchs

and it happend over the xams period and its now apirl

i have had rabbits living outside for 12 years and nothing has killed them then (havent had rabbits for 2 years )

You sound as though your piggies are very secure and if there has been no sign of anything trying to get into their cages I wouldn't panic.

Mink are like weasels or ferrets and used to be bred on farms for making fur coats. A lot were released into the wild and they will scavange whatever they can get hold of. I dont think they would be able to get into a secure cage though. People keep ferrets in cages similar to rabbits and pigs and if they cant get out then the mink shouldn't be able to get in!

I think its more worrying that the breeder next door is looking to get more pigs even though the others were attacked. mallethead

My piggies live in an outdoor hutch. In the winter they are in a snug little tent, a bit like a hutch cover but more room to breathe! I haven't actually had the hutch outside yet, but from what I can tell, there are no foxes or rats where I live, just cats.. Your piggies will be perfectly safe ;)

Mink are really vicious and this time of year they're really hungry with them having babies to feed - does anyone remember when the animal rights activists released a whole load from farms in Staffordshire and Hampshire?

There was a mink farm near where I used to live and they had a lot released by animal activists .

well my guinea pigs been fine so far to get in to the cages sat nighy away there would have to move the big wheel bins which we put in frount of them to stop the platic sheets blowing in the night when its windy

comments like this are unnecessary. Her guineapigs are secure and I'm very sure she is keeping a close eye on them. they are in a lit, open area in a well made hutch with a over over it. if you have nothing nice to say say nothing at all.

It is a ghastly tragedy but now you are aware of the risks in your area hopefully you'v spared yours a similar fate.

Longer days now whoop whoop!
