I am so scared, I was going outside with piggies veg and a rat was sitting in the downstairs part of the hutch, in the bowl eating! :-\ :-\
My dogs came over ut missed it!
It was a baby,my outside piggies are in a Thistle Hall with a scratch and newton hugger and snuggle with a plank of wood to keep the bottom tight......,but he just jumped out.God what am I to do...................

I really don't know what to say :-X i don't think you can use poison as if he does get in there again and has any traces on him the piggies could eat it,
could your piggies come indoors for a while till you can get rid of him ?There seems to be an awful lot of rats around at the moment ,we had one under our shed(not the piggies one) and we used poison, also went to feed the budgies the other day and there was a field mouse sitting in their bowl having a snack,he didnt even seem to care I was there ::) Hopefully someone else may have a better idea O0

Thanks we already have 4 piggies inside, and hubby not keen to have anymore in, but I'm really scared that the rat will hurt the piggies :-\

OMG that's horrible. Any idea how the rat is getting in? I think maybe you should bring them in until the problem can be solved. Good luck! x

Yep , the one we saw just crawled through the bars ?, tomorrow we are putting smaller mesh on hutch, it is a shame though as I wont be able to see them so easily, but if it means they will be safe ?

Yep someone here said that a rat can get in through the bars on the P@H Lavander Lodge, I was like what? It didn't seem possible but I now understand that they can, rats can go very flat I've felt them under pavement slabs in the garden!

I like domestic rats but wild ones do scare me, wish they didn't as they are only looking for food!

The extra mesh sounds a good idea, hopefully it won't be for long and like you said at least they will be safe.
good luck S xx

ditto i like domestic ratties too, but wild ones :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: >:D >:D >:D >:D

Good luck i'm hoping you can find a way of getting rid of them without having to worry about hurting the piggies :( :(

What a horrible shock for you love :o :o :o (((((((((HUGS))))))))) from us :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

OMG :o

Bring them inside till you can figure out how to get rid of the rat and how to keep other rats out

get the smaller mesh on asap and it will have to be small as rats can get through the smallest of holes. clean the bowls regular aswell as rats could have been anywhere ewwww
Once you have done that get the poison down I was was told where there is one rat there are 8 more behind it ewwwww

yes was about to suggest that, put down traps behind the hutch(was looking at thistle hall my self today O0 great hutch) try to upset the whole routine for the rat, you could also put the food in the guineas sleeping quarters for a little while, why your dealing with this prob

Good luck.
If its a cage trap use a cooked chicken bone with a bit of meat still on it tied to the hook that makes the door close.
I have tried all sorts of bate in a cage trap and i have only ever caught a rat using a chicken bone, everything else they managed to get off without setting the trap off

Ah right thankyou will go to get some now, we have put a carrot morsel in there.sx

Ours were partial to a bit of burnt sausage and chocolate too ;D ;D

Good luck catching the Rat Sally, if you need some smaller mesh I have a huge roll here if you wanted to colllect as much as you need tomorrow. Off doing a home check from 12-2 ish but will be in during the morning if that is any good. Thinkng of you and your piggys :smitten:

Thanks Vikki, think we have just enough, Steve will do the same for buns tmrw.sx

Good luck with the humane trap. We didn't succeed with ours unfortunately but didn't know about the chicken bone. We tried cheese, dog food and bird seed (they love cereal stuff and were eating bird food that I put out).
