Was reviewing my pic thread and read the mention of "Texel." So I Googled it, looked at the pix on Wikipedia, and said the above title of this thread. It is so interesting to learn all of this! Usually I'm the obnoxious girl in the room who knows it all. In this room I know nothing, NOTHING! What a refreshing change of pace. Maybe my little one was supposed to come into my life so I could get this education? God works in mysterious ways.

lol.... yes, it was news to me before I got mine (just over a year ago) too ..... and I've heard their personalities are different (along with looks) with different breeds.

Absolutely!

Even though every piggie has a unique "guineapigality" as my brother likes to say, each breed has some general character traits or personality traits, as well. Every breed is awesome to me, of course, as I love pigs so very much. Texels are cool piggies. In my experience, they're a little more sedate or calm and sturdy or stoic. My female Texels were very maternal too, always grooming and snuggling, and tended to look after their needier cage mates like the chronically ill or special needs pigs.

Oh, do tell - which ones talk the most or are the most expressive? I love talking animals. I have a cat who carries on a conversation and a dog who definitely has things on her mind and would say more than woooooooooo-woooo-rowr-wooo if she could form her lips correctly. Another kitty calls for me to find out where I am when I am working out on the land on my good days.

That's a hard one to answer! I've had a lot of big "talkers" of different breeds. I had to give it some thought to come up with which breeds may be the most expressive or talkative in general.

I think maybe, thinking back through all my pigs that I've cared for over the years, that in general I'd have to say the Peruvians and Abyssinians, including Peruvian-Aby mixes have been the most vocal. Especially if you mess up their hair! :))

That being said, there have been a few big talkers in all breeds I've had and a couple Peruvians and Abys that have been VERY quite. And, I haven't owned some breeds, like Teddies, Rexes, Himalayans, so I couldn't say about those.

I'm sure others may have some info to share which may or may not agree with what I've said too, especially since, like I said, every piggie also has a unique personality that contributes to all this.

hey pat, I have a pure breed rex (short fuzzy curly hair) and OMG he is sooooo loud. When he wheeks (on full tummy or otherwise), his little ears move in sync... adorable!

I have two sisters at the moment, they were two of four born at same time......... from what i believe they have a sister that's even louder than Velvet (my loooong haired girl) :(|)
You'll find piggies in different sizes.......colours and breeds and they're all absolutely gorgeous droolx)

oh by the way .........i call it their pigsonalities :(|)

I think thats one of the many things I like about guinea pigs - the fact that there is soooo much variety among them - both lookwise but more importantly personality wise. I have 8 and theyve all got their own personality. I'm not good at identifying breeds and dont even know what most of mine are (need to look into this - might post asking pigtures at some point) but love their characters which are very different :)

There are so many different breeds out there! I've had a long-haired piggy, short hair, fuzzy hair, Abyssinian ( kind of spiky hair) and hairless!

Pigsonality is not necessarily a matter of breed - my two (unloved children's ex-pets)teddy sisters Nia and Nerys couldn't be more different in temperament, for instance.

Nerys is as chilled out as Nia is full of energy; that's why they are so different in size! Nerys is also the grump of the Tribe and Nia the top lady, even though she is one of the smaller girls.

I have also had quite a few abys and smooth piggies over the years, and they all have had quite distinct personalities.

I would never go just for looks and expect a certain temper - the biggest personalities are often the plainest piggies. But some piggies definitely look as cute as a cucumber!

I have a peruvian-aby mix and he's SUPER quiet! But I also have a teddy and I've had one in the past as well and they were both incredibly loud. But even though they were both loud they definitely act different. I've never had 2 piggies act exactly the same and I'm always surprised by some of their personalities when I get new ones.

Don't get me on this subject. As a rescue I DO NOT condone breeding, but I became facinated with different breeds and colour inheritance many years ago, am still learning. I mainly learned about the genes involved with breeds I like and colours I like. Still learning about others. I think personality is an indervidual thing rather than a breed thing though.
