I had some of my rescue piggies out in the run as such a nice day. 2 boys were in the run, i go out to put them away and there is blood everywhere. Pools of it, clumps of it there was loads. It was coming from one of the piggies, i could see all this blood but couldn't part the fur to see deeper as he was in so such pain. My firstb thought was fighting but the other one was clean and had no blood anywhere near his mouth etc.

Anyway had to call the emergency vet out, rushed him straight over there, they had to sedate him as he was in so much pain. they shaved his fur and said it was a bite wound, you could also see other little bites that hadn't broken the skin. They had to give him a general to clean and stitch it properly.

He is now sleeping at he vets, he is drugged up to the eyebalsl on morphine etc. He is 3 and a half so not a young one.

My real concern now is what has bitten him as covinced it wasn't his mate. The run has bars that are about an inch apart.
Plase send loads of vibes for Bill, he has been through an awful time. I am also quite concerned about the cost as the call out itself was over £50, so god knows with the op etc what it will be!

Oh dear, sounds awful, poor you (and poor piggy!)

Boar fights can be bloody, but if it wasn't his 'friend' then perhaps it could have been a rat? :{

Hope he's soon on the mend

Sending my vibes to the poor, poor boy! Could it have been a rat?

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Thanks everyone. I am really worried it could have been a rat. We live on the back of Fields and also a supposed river though more like a ditch lol. I am just worried if there are rats about i will get the blame because of the rescue even though i do my best to keep it clean, there is always hay in my garden. I also have my 2 rabbits free range in the garden and don't want them bitten.

Any advise greaty appreciated regarding rats!

My little girl jennifer (mini pig) got attacked by a rat..the bite marks are quite obvious are at least they were on her....they were like fang marks
Rats also tend to go for the head/neck/throat - a rats instinct normally makes it attack things smaller then itself but i'm not saying a rat wont have attacked something bigger esp in wild rats as they are big anyway..(the rat that got jennifer was a pet rat)

hope that makes sence...

sending all my love and healing vibes to you and bill

How awful, that's very scary indeed. I hope your poor rescue guinea is better soon. I can only think rat too if not his cage mate as they can squeeze quite small and maybe one inch is small enough for one to squeeze through.

Does the vet have an opinion on the type of bites?

sending vibes for poor bill x
i absolutely adore rats but they are among one of the most vicious furries to other furry species,
i have heard of horrific injurys done to pigs from rats in a matter of seconds,
i had 2 rats ages ago and decided to get my mum a pet mouse,
i didnt know the mouse could escape his cage but he did and got into the rat cage, within 10 minutes of me last checking on them the rats had eaten all of him except the bones8....
It was horribe,i canb only imagine wild rats would be worse x

Well he got through the night, i am picking him up soon, still not out of the woods as its still early days. He is heavily dosed up and will be on Baytril for a long time as they think an infection will come. I will need to take him back every 2-3days for check ups.

The cost so far is £101

Ouch - for Bill and for your bank balance! Fingers crossed he stays strong.

Hope he is feeling better soon and makes a swift recovery, and your bank balance is not too damaged...

Oh how terrible, hope little Bill makes a speedy recovery. He may be scared to go back out in the run. Will you be too scared to put them out :(. You don't suppose it was something like a Mink maybe, cos they hunt rabbits etc in the wild.

Poor little Bill - could it have been a magpie? Or a snake? We have snakes near here so I always watch them in the run, in fact I am so paranoid that they rarely go in it now. (my brother got bitten by an adder in our garden and was off work for 3weeks).
Could it have been your other piggy? He could have washed his face after biting Bill..

Hope he gets better soon, poor little poppet.

that's a good point katie! I never thought about it maybe being a grass or other type of snake, especially with sue saying there's a field near by where the snakes could hide in long grass it could be a possibility!

Snakes are evil and they can squeeze into runs and underneath them... and magpies can peck them. If you have adders nearby they would kill a pig, and you can't do anything about them as they are a protected species.
We think it might have been a magpie that killed our resident blackbird Tufty's first chicks one awful morning.. pulled all their little feathers out, horrid birds they are.

well a quick update. Bill is is quite active, but he is not eating. He ate a tiny bit of Dandelion leaf yesterday and nothing today, he has had 2 tiny very dried pooh's. I have syringe feed him some CC tonight so hopefully that wll kick start him back into eating!

Se,

Hope he's feeling better now matey - get yourself some chocolate for your nerves!

As far as snakes go, they are NOT evil, they are snakes! Unless you happen to put your piggie run on, or near a nest, i very much doubt either a grass snake OR an adder would purposely go after a pig.
They wouldn't be able to eat one, so unless they felt threatened they wouldn't bother with them. The biggest thing they could eat is a vole or frog!
Before i run away and hide i would also like to add that Magpie's are not EVIL either. They come from the Corvus family of birds which are the most intelligent of the wild birds and they are scavengers and opportunists of the highest order.
They will attack other birds, small animals - it might seem terrible to us, but this is what they do, it is just nature.
