Hiiiiiiiiiii y'all.

I have some progress.. finally.

Birt update: I looked through the vet locator, got in touch with several ones near by, and enquired about vet bills. Found, Rose Cottage Vet Centre in Runcorn. OH MY GOD. Fabulous! I wish I went here to begin with.
Such nice people. I could tell from walking through the doors, they care. Just got an instant good feeling. I saw one of the vets, who is really nice. She had previously got some vet history from other vets I'd been to (Andale Vets & Vets4Pets in Pets@Home). She said she knew we had treated him for mange and gave him Ivermectin. And she said Pets at home had been "not very helpful". Had to bite my lip as didnt want to start talking about them!

ANYWAY, she took Birt away for some skin scrapes, poor baba came back with his back all sore :( and she explained, it looks like the mange has gone but, unfortunately he has an underlying fungal problem which may have started first and then he contracted the mange. Either way - as soon as I get the results, I am giving Pets at Home what for. I can't stand them, I'll have to start a new thread and post the email the head office sent to me! Back to Birt - she has taken the sample away to be tested and said it will be this week before I get the results, from then she can then treat him for the fungal. She mentioned I can for now put Sudacrem on him to ease the irritation or even give him salt baths. She has given him some antibiotics, which is banana flavoured. He has a few days left on this, but guys - when I give it to him, I let him run around, and for the first time, I saw him popcorn not once.. but 4 times. It was so nice <3

I have also enquired about neuturing him - and I'd feel comfortable leaving him with them. But ofcourse will sort this problem out first. I think he will be so much happier if he can meet Gertrude, and have a nice little lady friend.

Hope you're all well :)

Glad that you have found a competent vet you trust. Fungal and mites come often hand in hand; they are both opportunists that hit when the immune system is lowered either by stress or illness.
Please be aware that lab tests usually only test for ringworm, but not other forms of fungal. Sudocrem and salt baths are just there to keep any infection of the skin down.

All the best for a continued recovery! It would be much better to wait with neutering until Birt is in good condition, as the operation means stress on his body again.
