Hello,

My guinea pig cocoa started not eating and pooping much since yesterday afternoon. She finished her vegs but just nibble a bit of hays. I took her to a vet this afternoon. The x-ray showed increase gas pattern and some stool present. She was given Enrofloxacin and Metoclopramide. Plus I was instructed to do assist feed with Emeraid Herbivore mix. She has been given one dose of each medicine. But I was having hard time to give her the mix. Does anyone have had any experience with this? Is there any tip to make feeding easier? She fights very hard. I could not get her finish the required 4 -6 ml mix. What else can I do to make her feel better and recover quicker from what she is dealing with? Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear Cocoa is poorly. It sounds ike she has some bloat you can gently massage Cocoa's sides and tummy, this will help her shift the gas.

Syringe feeding can be a little bit of a battle especially at forst when the piggies isn't use to it. Here is a link to a helpsheet from the Guinea pig Helpline by a former poster on here Laura http://www.guineapighelpline.com/SyringeFeedingFactsheet.pdf it is really helpful in giving you tips.

Has the vet gave you any Metoclopramide to give her at home? This is a gut stimulant and will help keep everything moving through. If there is no improvement, please get back in touch with your vet.

Hope Cocoa gets well soon.

Thank you so much Billy! Yes, she was given 14 days of medicine. I just got up and checked on her. Just one poop. She came out and ate little hay and finished 3-4 piece of leaf vegs. Then went back to her igloo. It is 4 AM here. The medicine was given about 10 hour ago. Should it start working now? Or it will take more dosage? Thanks!

What medicine was it? Metoclopramide?

Hi and welcome!

Which country are you in, please? Medication and product names can differ!

I hope that your little girl will be better soon, but please be aware that bloat can come back. Don't give her fresh veg until the bloat is safely over as that could cause more gas. Please massage her belly gently regularly. Weigh her daily and if necessary hand feed.

Thanks! I am in US. She eats very little hay. The only other thing she eats is fresh veg. She seems like cucumber better than others today. My vet did not tell me to stop feeding veg. She told me to give what she wants to eat so her system keeps working. I am handfeeding her but without much luck with the Herbivore mix. I will try to soak the pellets and try again in a bit.

I bought a bottle of Pedialyte. She has been given some of it.

She still has tons of energy to fight with me when I am trying to give her med or food.

An update on Cocoa. She is doing so much better today. This morning at 5AM when I went to check on her, she came out and ate some pellets and hay then went back to hide. That made me very happy.

I am still handfeeding her as she still does not eat enough. Following the helpful handfeeding tips Billy provided I switched the syringe to 1 ml that made a huge difference. I do 1ml at a time then give her little break and do another one. Thanks, Billy!

Thanks to everyone for your helpful posts!
