One of my piggies is not very well.

I've only recently been given two baby pigs and one of them does not seem very well today.
I first noticed a crackling/ ingested kind of sound last night after I put them back in their indoor hutch, that went on for about 40 minutes or so then stopped. This morning I haven't noticed it again, but she seems very tired. Normally they are alert with wide eyes whenever I go over to them, but she just seems to want to sit in one place and sleep.

She has been running around a little bit, but only when I took her out and put her back in.

She's been sneezing a bit, but so far her eyes are clear as well as her nose and bum. She has been eating grass and nibbling on hay.

Could this be an URI? I'm very scared for her as this happened to one of my first guinea pigs years ago, she started sounding crackly and I took her to the vet and all they told me to do was feed her more Vitamin C, she died a few weeks or months later and my second one died not long after her, can't remember the exact time frame.

I'm going to take them both to the vet today, but would very much like to be armed with some infomation beforehand, not that any vets I go to ever listen to me. :(

Any advice is much appreciated.
 
i cant advise sorry, i think you are already doing what you can going to see the vet.

Just keep her warm and love her :)
 
Have her seen by a vet as soon as you can. it is most likely URI.

I hope that a printout will help you. The piggy will definitely need antibiotics.
 
Thanks very much. The earliest they can see her is 5pm, so I hope I've caught it early enough for her to get better. :/
 
Make sure that if she is prescribed antibiotics to ask the vet to give you probiotics too. Especially if prescribed baytril. Hope your piggie is ok. Take the other one too so they can check her over xx
 
Just a quick little update before we head off to the vets.
Honey still seems quite tired and reluctant to leave her litter box, but she did leave when I put some lettuce in the cage which she munched up happily. So at least she will be well hydrated.
Meanwhile Ginger is her usual popcorning self, speeding around the cage like a race car driver. I will definitely be keeping a close eye on her, and will get the vet to check her over as well.

Because URI's are contagous, should I attempt to get some AB's for Ginger as well?

I hope this all goes well :/ I haven't exactly had the best experiences with vets over the years.
 
Some Vets are often reluctant to prescribe "preventative" antibioitics for a piggie if they are not showing any symptoms. However it is worth asking your vet to give you enough antibiotics for two piggies...(on the proviso that you will ring them before you give any to Ginger..that should make them co-operative..)

Well.... That was an interesting visit to the vets. Vet was fantastic, he seemed very clued in about GP's and their sensitive tummy's, and so was reluctant to try AB's at this stage, since "Honey" seems to be all good apart from the tiredness. He told me to watch her over the next 24 hours and if she is worse by tomorrow then he'll give her some AB's.

Now... I'm sure I'm not the only one this happened to, but... Y'know how Honey is meant to be a girl? It turns out "she" is quite the opposite. :...

You can imagine how much I am fretting right about now.

The vet told me Honey is only reaching puberty, and maybe I'm being a wishful thinker, but I guess that may be true since I haven't noticed them doing anything with each other (although of course, I can't watch them 24 hours a day).
But then I read somewhere males can get the mother pregnant at 3 weeks old?!

If Ginger is pregnant, I will never forgive myself for being so stupid for not checking this myself. :/ Although I don't think it would have made much difference.

Either way, I'm in a rut.

Honey does seem to have perked up, and if she continues to do so then I'll get him Nuetered in a couple of weeks. But obviously there must be a chance Ginger is pregnant?
The vet weighed them both and they weight the same. I'll do my own weighing though, to moniter her. Argh she's just a baby!
