I had a trio of female guinea pigs for 2 years up until March when one died, and a month ago one one died. Now I'm left with one 3 year old. I've left a mourning period and now she seems ok. I Don't know if I should get her a friend. I know guinea pigs need company but they can also fight when reintroduced. My mum and dad don't want another one. They also didn't care that they needed a bigger cage when it wasn't even big enough for one. I don't think they want us to have any more piggies but still the welfare of the girlie we still have is most important, to me anyway. Any advice on what I can do?

I’m sorry that you have lost another piggy but is she still being kept in too small a cage? If your parents aren’t keen on you having more piggies it might be best to speak to a rescue centre to rehome your remaining piggy so that she could have a friend. It’s very lonely for an animal as you can’t be with her all the time.

3 years is only about halfway through a normal guinea pig life span; it would be good if your girl could find a new companion.

Good rescues offer dating at a rescue to find a character compatible mate and make sure that acceptance happens; this can be a sow or neutered boar of any age. This ensures that you do not end up with piggies that do not get on. It also helps you to look for a similar aged piggy as an argument to use with your parents. You can also discuss with the rescue about taking in any survivor to make sure that they are safe if you do not want to continue with piggy chain.

My parents are still very loving, but laws on keeping animals have changed since they were young. If I talk to them about rehoming Teddy or getting a bigger cage, they would choose the cage. I really hope I can persuade them!

Wishing you all the best! it is tough when you have to convince your parents that animal care and understanding that moved on so much - and that goes for all pet species!

Just a suggestion ..... Could you persuade them to come onto the forum and ask questions themselves?

They'd already be on here without a doubt! But unfortunately there's been a recent family emergency that's thrown off any routine we had. Hmm but you do have a point, a google at least only takes a couple of seconds. Will do.

Hope all goes well!
Larger cage for Christmas? Not too late!

That's a shame, but as a parent myself (although my son is now grown up), I know that parents don't always share their child's passions, and in your case, your pet. This is perfectly fine, but you want to do the best for your remaining girl. There is a really good buy on this cage, Skyline Maxi XXL Small Pet Cage | Free P&P £29+ at zooplus! which comes in as cheaper than a lot of smaller cages, so you might persuade them.

Almost the thing happened to me. I had two pigs. One died, my lonely pig stopped squealing excitedly whenever I fed her... we adopted another and now the once-lonely one is squealing again. I definitely recommend adopting another.
