Hi my wife and i are looking for a bit of advice, we had 4 piggies all 3 years old and sadly we have lost 3 of them in the space of 5 months most recent was Milo on Monday night :( now Milly our last remaining piggy is left on her own, she is still moving around the cage and eating but seems to be fairly inactive when we are not in as all poops are in one area, we are giving her lots of attention and treats but can anyone suggest what to do to cheer her up? Thanks

Would you be able to get her a friend? She could live for another three years, a long time for her to be on her own.

Yeah we are looking into that atm. We just dont know if we want to keep the cycle going yet we have lost 3 in a 5 month period which is really tough, i never imagined i could get so attached to them, like losing your wee family.

I'm really sorry you had to go through that so many times in such a small range of time... Sending you tons of hugs.
And sorry I can't really help, just wanted to show my support x

There is no easy answer.you have been really unlucky losing three in such a short time.I have been keeping them for three years and have only lost one young and one from old age (she was a rescue so older when we got her)Huge hugs

So sorry for your losses. Heartbreaking. I've lost 2 in 3 months and still gutted about both.
Not sure where you are situated but in the UK are many reputable rescues who may be able to bond Milly with a similar age sow or neutered boar so you will have similar age and life expectancy

So sorry for your wee piggies :( We are located in Paisley Scotland, if you could recommend some rescuers that would be great thanks.

I also wanted to say how sorry I am for your loss of so many piggies in such a short time.
I can not even imagine how hard that must be.

I know things are fairly different here, but do any of your rescues do 'loan' piggies.
Here this is quiet common, when a rescue or breeder will lend you a piggie as a companion to a single pig, on the condition that you return the loan piggie to them when yours passes away.
Initially I was horrified to read about such a scheme, but apparently it works well and is perfect in cases like yours, as it offers companionship for as long as is needed, without creating a never ending cycle or single piggies.

I am so sorry for your sudden losses. I have recently lost my sow and have a single baby on her own, as well as a pair that she cant live with due to clashing with one of them. I am currently on a hunt for a sow, I'm looking at the sspca as well as considering travelling down south with her to be bonded by a reputable rescue.

I guess you have to decide if you want to continue the cycle of owning guinea pigs- i know losing them can be a huge knock. If you dont, the sspca may be able to help with rehoming, but with that option you wont be able to contact any new owner. Or you could contact a rescue down south and try and arrange for her to be transported to one that has space available.

I hope your little one gets on okay for the meantime x

Hi,

I am so sorry for the loss of your piggies. It is certainly heart breaking.

I know this is probably hard to think about just now but I do agree with Adelle in that I guess the first thing you need to do is decide whether you wish to continue having piggies. It is sad but at one time or another you will be left with just one piggy and need to make that decision.

Unfortunately we do not have any guinea pig rescues here in Scotland at present so your options would be the sspca or a rescue in England. I am unsure though whether the sspca have many single females and or whether they do a bonding service.

I am part of the Facebook closed group for Tees Valley Guinea Pig Rescue which is run by Stewart Holeman aka @Stewybus on this forum. He is an amazing person who if you wish would be worth chatting with to perhaps consider your options. I have tagged him in to this post but you could also pm him on here or go to the Facebook page and contact him.

I am based in Blantyre and am happy to help in any way I can.

xx

Firstly I'm really sorry for your sad losses. I know exactly how you feel because I also lost 3 of my own over a 5 week period at the end of last year. It hit me for six but you can't be down for long here when you're running a guinea pig rescue & have another 30 plus to care for.

I suspect that Milly is suffering depression & I do think she needs a friend as soon as possible. I see you're in Scotland which at present is thin on rescues with no recommended ones on the vet locator at present. I have a friend up their who is planning to start a rescue in the near future. I could get in touch with her to see of she can help you. Otherwise you would be welcome to bring Milly here for a bonding/dating visit to see if we can find a friend for her. We have a solo female with one of our foster mums & by the end of the month will have 2 neutered boys safe to go & live with a girl.

You're also welcome to give me a telephone call if you'd like to discuss Milly's future.

I had a late night last night & I'm shattered now so need to get some shut eye but if you send me a pm I'll send you my contact details so you can phone me or send me your number & I'll phone you tomorrow.
