Little Leela is about six months old now and doing great, except that she intermittently has one watery eye. It is on and off, not constant. The eye itself is not swollen or red and never has been. She will have a couple of days where she will have 'eye boogies' and just when I got to call the vet, it resolves for another week or two, then recurs for another few days. It kind of reminds me of when I had infants who would get blocked tear ducts where the tears weren't draining properly. Is this an eye infection or irritation? Can guinea pigs have blocked tear ducts? I decided to see the vet before cottage season (it's much harder to get a cavy-savvy vet from the cottage and I would end up having to drive 2 hours home if it suddenly worsened there) but cannot get in until Monday and there is no guarantee that there will even be any dampness to see on her eye by then. Yesterday was a watery day, but it looks fine so far today.

No idea, and I'm sorry for that, but is there any chance of getting a photo of the eye when it's acting up, assuming it does it again before Monday? That way even if it's clear on Monday there's some evidence for it.

My Hafina had permanently blocked tear ducts, which were either the result of a bad untreated eye infection or led to an infection. We cannot tell because she was found dumped in bad state on somebody's door step. She was the piggy whose eyes were licked in my old avatar.

Clear watery eyes can be caused by irritation of some sort. Keep an eye on her conjunctiva, too. You can try ease any discomfort with visco tears from the pharmacy; the gel has a longer lasting effect. But it may good to see a vet to make sure that there is nothing underlying that is causing the frequent watery discharge.

Just a quick update- I took Leela to the vet for her gunky eye. There were no abrasions, even though it seemed not to be bothering her that much we decided to treat it as a bacterial eye infection. She is on an antibiotic eye drop and is not too happy with me about that, but the eye itself looks much better (no more gunk around it this morning!) The staff did make a big fuss over her, as they haven't seen her before and she is the 'new pig.' I feel like I know the staff pretty well by now, as I used to have to come in all the time to get regular meds for Sundae. The staff all knew Sundae really well and knew that this was the piggie we got after Sundae passed away, so we had a nice chat and Leela seemed to appreciate all the pats and attention, though she didn't appreciate the vet visit too much!

I hope she continues to improve. You did the best thing in taking her to the vets, it'll have been quite an adventure for her with all the attention.

Let's hope little Leela's eye soon clears up. I have had piggies of my own with life long eye conditions who lived happy lives with no problem. A recent foster pig also had some conjunctival overfill leading to watery eyes but no need for treatment according to the vet. Fingers crossed the eye will stop watering after this treatment.
