It has been a very long time since I posted on here, for a variety of reasons (including work which interferes with a lot I find!) But I thought I would come back with a wonderful story! OK, before I go any further the title isn't exactly right as it is 1 year & 1 day (if you are reading this on the 20th Jan 10!).
Anyway, back to the point! This time last year 2 of my precious babies had just been rescued from a home in Preston, along with about 18 or so other piggies. They had been rescued & many of them were in a terrible state. They went to various foster carers, including Vicky who cared for my babies. (for the record I love Vicky & her mum Janet!)
It was hard to age the piggies because they were in such a terrible state & because of their size. Billy (aka Bibbs), the funky, 'tutu wearing' white boy was about 4-5 weeks old & Bobby (aka Bobbs) the scruff with a side parting & quiff was about 2-3 weeks old. Billy had horrendous mites. he had several bald patches which were red raw & bleeding from all the scratching. Bobbs was very underweight & bloated. The vet didn't think Bobbs would live.
Vicky & Janet nursed my boys back to health. The mites were treated & fur gerw back. Bobby defied the odds & survived, although he was tiny. They didn't know what fresh vegetables were & it took them some time to get used to them. They were both so scared & timid, although in the cage Bibbs was the boss.
I got to meet them a couple of times before I adopted them. It was great to see them changing, growing & finding their little personalities. I was so excited when they came home with me! They originally lived in an indoor house, which spent a lot of time on the lounge floor so my then, 3 big pigs, could go up to them & say 'hello'. Although a lot of those 'hellos' were, in fact, growls & bottom wiggles!
I had 3 big pigs then - Jerry, Pippin & Legolas. Soon afte the babies came home I lost Pippin & Jerry within 12 hours. Poor Legolas had lost his best friend a couple of months before that & I was so worried about him & how he would cope. I took a chance & put the babies in with Legolas & here we are!
What a difference a year makes!
Billy is, to put it bluntly, a big girls blouse. He is a chicken! He spends most of the day in the cage, but sometimes he gets brave & trots round the lounge, until I say hello, then he's in the house before you canm say 'guinea pig'.
He is the loudest pig I have ever known in my life. And I have had a few. Seriously, he has been heard by people I have been talking to on the phone & when I have been in another room. Yep, he's that loud! He knows when I am getting their food, opening the fridge, been shopping & ignored them for much too long.
He loves his food! He loves carrots & ends up with an orange chin when he's finished! White fur shows up everything! He has now developed a taste for celery leaves & I have to divide them up between him & Legolas! He also adores cucumber & likes to remind me of this in the evenings! Bibbs is the piggy who will sit with me for ages & not worry about anything else. By the way, I said he was 'tut wearing' earlier. I don't dress him up (I don't believe in it personally). However, when he runs, because of his fur it looks likes he has a tutu on! Honestly!
Bobby is no longer a tiny, scrawny pig. After being smaller than Billy for several months, he is now bigger than him (weight & fur!). Puberty hit him hard & he went from being a shy, timid pig, to a bossy, growling nuisance. He likes to start fights, usually wiuth Legolas as Billy doesn't play! He will chase Billy round the lounge though when he wants to bite his butt! Bobbs has been found with white fur round his mouth on more than one occasion, trying to look like he hasn't done anything he should, even when we both know Billy has a blad patch somewhere on his butt!
Bobbs is also the biggest chatterbox I have ever heard. He will run around the lounge talking to himself quite happily! I always say he has taken after me in that respect! The only thing he has to show for his rough start in life is bad skin on 2 of his paws. The skin is permanently peeling & the fur comes out - a bit like mites but not. It's managed with creams from Gorgeus Guineas & he doesn't bother with it - unless mummy is doiung a skin insepction, then he does his best to hide his paws from me!
His fur has a centre parting down his back & he has a little quiff which sits on the top of his head! It is so sweet, although if he ever asks I will, in fact, tell him it is very manly & he has nothing to worry about!
And Legolas? He is wonderful & so happy. He was so quiet & subdued after losing his brothers, but I have no doubt that Bibbs & Bobbs saved his life. He does love them - most of the time! He can be found sitting near Billy in the cage chilling or running round the lounge with Bobby, usually growling & teeth gnashing, unless they are asleep under the radiator! Then there are the cucumber tug of war games, but that's another story!
I wanted to share our little story with you all, to show you how 2 piggies who had a crap start to their life are now living the life of luxary. One piggy who wasn't supposed to live is bigger & stronger than ever. One thing I know is this - I will never get another piggy from a pet shop. Knowing that you have given a pig a new home to spoil & love them for life, is amazing. Even the dog loves her brothers & cucumber time! The guineas have their cucumber first in the cage, then Susie gets her stick of cuc! So do the children I look after (I'm a childminder.) The younger children love to sit & watch the piggies in their cage for hours! I am quite possibly the luckiest piggy mummy in the whole, wideworld!
And here's to many more piggy rescue anniversaries for us all!
Love & squeaks
