My 2 1/2 year old boar has had several bouts of issues with his right eye only, just after his first birthday. He usually has only had one infection a year, but we've been to the vet 3 times since December 16 2017. It started with a corneal ulcer. We cleared that up and he started making a "hooting" noise while breathing on February 14 2018. He was put on antibiotics for suspected URI. His eye was a mess on February 22 so the vet prescribed an antibiotic eye drop. We're booked for an xray this coming Tuesday to assess possible tooth root elongation. I want a definitive answer and to get to the root of this problem so that if some kind of surgery is necessary it's being done while he's young. The vet diagnosed him previously with nasolacrimal narrowing. This means that the duct that allows tears to drain out of the eye is narrowed and gets full of bacteria, causing eye infections. He's been on antibiotics 3 times a day for nearly a month and he's still making this "hooting" noise while breathing. If anyone has any insight or suggestions or similar experiences or knowledge of elongated roots, I would appreciate your thoughts or advice. I've lost a lot of sleep and am beside myself with worry. I absolutely adore him and will do anything to help him. Thank you in advance.

Hi I’m so sorry to hear about all the problems you’ve been having. I don’t know where you’re based but a lot of people on the forum would recommend getting your piggie treated by Simon Maddock at the Cat & Rabbit care clinic in Northampton if there is a chance it is a dental issue. He sounds amazing with Guinea Pigs especially at dental issues & people visit him from Scotland and all over the UK. It might be worth considering getting your piggie to treat him if this is something you could do.

Apart from this I can’t really add any advice but just wanted to wish you luck I hope you manage to get to the bottom of it - must be so stressful for you.

Thank you so much! I'm actually from Calgary in Canada. I posted here because people in the UK have been keeping guinea pigs for a long time, and seem to have a vast knowledge of all things pigs. I hope that's ok. My vet is an exotic vet specialist in rabbits and guinea pigs, but she did mention that she may need be referring us if we can't resolve the issue. Thank you so much for your time.

You ladies are lovely! Thank you so much. I did some research before posting this and found out that @furryfriends (TEAS) knew a lot about dental issues, and invited her to the conversation. Hopefully she would be able to add her insight.
