My 4 year old pig Gingie was found to be drooling and losing weight about 12 days ago now. We brought her to the vet, who said she had teeth issues and needed a dental.
She had her dental, while still showing interesting in food, and after her procedure she still ate small amounts but slowly and not much.

Now, over the week since then, she's not been eating anything at all - only critical care that we're giving her. We've kept her weight from dropping any further, but she's not gaining, and she started to drool again.

I feel like I'm watching her waste away in real time, and it's horrible. There's only one good vet for guinea pigs I know about in my area and it's the one who sees her, but they don't know what's wrong with her either.

I have no idea what's happening or what to do.

Does anyone have experience in anything similiar? Possible causes, possible paths to take? At this stage, I don't think she's going to survive this, and I'm getting desperate.

I am sorry you are in such a frightening situation. Could your vet ask Simon from The Cat and Rabbit Clinic for advice? He is probably the best guinea pig dental vet in the UK. I am not sure what the symptoms are showing. It looks like she needs further examination and treatment. I hope Gingie gets better soon 🙏❤️

I’m so sorry Gingie is still having trouble eating after her dental. I recently had a piggy whose tongue was trapped by his over grown molars. He had a dental and it took him about 2 weeks to start eating again for himself. I feel he got worse before he got better.

He had to have two types of painkillers afterwards as he looked so poorly. He also had a gut stimulant which I definitely think helped too.

I tried him with a bit of redigrass, some grass (but only if her tummy is used to grass), is she still in with a friend? If so I found taking him out for his own time eating veggies as he was so much slower than his buddy. Also I upped his pellet intake while he wasn’t eating well.

Lots of critical care too and I cut his veggies smaller too and some into strips.

I hope this helps. Good luck I hope she’s eating for herself very soon.

Here is his thread if you’d like to read it.
Pebble is off to the vets

She's on two painkillers too, as prescribed by the vet. And yes, she's still in with her friend Fizzy, and we've been taking Fizzy out for dinner so Gingie can eat (or rather, ignore her food) in her own time. Today I tried taking Gingie out to try and handfeed her and she wasn't interested at all.

As worried as I am, it's encouraging that for some pigs, they can get better even after they get worse.

The poster is in Australia.
Cat and Rabbit is a bit far.

So sorry that Gingie is struggling.
Holding you in my thoughts
