Okay so i'm a bit ... well i don't know confused, angry annoyed ? mallethead

on a guinea pig group on facebook, two or three people have been bragging how you don't need to give guinea pigs veg, it's cheaper to just give them grass instead.

Surely this doesn't hold the nutrition they need ?!

It's starting to wind me up theres people with 18 + pigs and they want to save money on everything, from adding oats to there nuggets to not feeding veg, if you can't afford them don't have that many ! :x

I know there is a member on here that feeds the pigs only hay and grass with veggie as a treat. Forgot the username. I will go dig it up.

I just wanted to check that I'm not wrong in holding that opinion i'd never dream of just feeding grass, or just feeding one veg, variety is best. right ?

It's certainly more natural; in the wild they wouldn't pop down to the local green grocer and come back with a bag of mixed veggies.

I try to feed my guys a natural-Ish diet; in terms of veg they only really get leafy things like grass, herbs, spinach, corn husks, carrot tops, kale etc. I'm not a big fan of feeding things like fruits and carrots and other non leafy veg although I have been giving them peppers and celery and cucumber lately in the heat to increase their fluid intake!

I don't know if a hay/ grass diet is bad but why do people get animals if they can't afford them mallethead. I mean I'm all for saving money where I can: I'm a very regular visitor at the reduced section (oh reduced section how I love thee :a19:), have grown some of my own veggies and buy in bulk when I can to try and cut costs but I'd never cut corners like filling the food with oats. At the end of the day animals aren't cheap and when it comes to medical issues there aren't any corners that can be cut- regarless of how you feel about it you need to get them to a vet and pay for whatever treatment they need. I also don't see why some of these people don't do the better thing and cut their numbers down and give fewer pigs better treatment.

Think this has got to be one of my biggest pet peeves- people who get pets without any real thought on how much they will cost.

Coconut i Couldn't agree more.!

i know a lady who in the spring summer feeds nuggets,ad lib hay, readigrass and ad lib fresh grass, she only feedsveg in the winter.
her animals are some of the biggest healthiest i have ever seen, if they do well on a diet then nowt wrong with it i say.

veggies

Surely, most people have veggies in anyway so a few given to them you won't miss. Or maybe they don't get 5 a day themselves.

I hope that the people who are recommending a strictly grass diet do not overlook the necessity of guinea pigs needing extra vitamin C!
