Hello so one of my guinea pigs passes away and we are left with only one . Now he seems to me doing fine and a bit more happier but he heard some guinea pig noises and started to speak for them . Now I don’t know if I should get a new one because he’s only two or just leave him on his own because I won’t be here when we go back to work . Any advice would be great

I am sorry for your loss.
Your piggy will grieve for the loss of his friend, but he will look to want a new companion. At only 2 years old, he is very young to consider spending the rest of his life alone. If you can look into finding him a new character compatible companion then that will be better for his long term happiness.

Age is not entirely relevant. It is character compatibility which is the essential factor. Two piggies must like each other to be able to form a bond. The best and safest way to ensure a good bond is to go to a rescue centre and have them help you find a suitable friend for him.
Do you have a centre near you?

We have a pets at home near us but not a center near us I’m just a bit worried that they won’t get along because my guinea pig wasn’t really friends with the other one and now he seems to be less angry . Will a rescue be better than pets at home adoption ?

You say he wasn’t really friend with the other one and he now seems less angry - such issues occur when two piggies are not correctly matched in their characters.

Yes a rescue would be better. Have a look at our rescue locator on the top banner of the site. It would be far better to travel a distance to find a centre to than go to a pet shop.

The issues you may face if you get a pet shop piggie will be: missexing (and therefore potential pregnancies), illnesses and failed bonds.

You would have to ensure you sex a pet shop piggy yourself as missexing is common.
You would then need to quarantine the new piggy for two weeks to ensure he didn’t have any illnessea

Your other hurdle would be the fact that character compatibility is vital. If you buy a piggy, then you have no idea if your piggy and the new piggy will even like each other. The choice is of course entirely yours, but you would need to prepare a plan b and that would be that the bonding fails and the two piggies would need to live in separate cages permanently .

If you can get to a rescue centre and date your boy so he can choose his own friend, then that risk is greatly reduced. Rescue piggies would also be correctly sexed and vet checked. It’s just the safer option!

Great than you for your help I’ve had a look and the nearest rescue is 1.30 hrs away in covid will I be able to go to that rescue ? And would I take the guinea pig with me to the rescue so he can see all of the pigs or would there be no point ?

Taking him with you is called boar dating. Give them a ring and see if they offer it. Some do, some don’t. They will still be able to help you even if they don’t offer dating.

However, You would need to call the rescue centre in question and ask if they are adopting out at this point, some are but some haven’t reopened yet. Even if they are open, they may not be able to offer dating yet due to the restrictions.

Even if they aren’t open at this point, they may be happy to put your name on a list for assistance when restrictions are lifted
