Open Wound On Belly

Hi all my piggie has been leaving blood spots over her fleece the last few days she's been fine eating drinking running around I straight away thought a UTI although she's 6yrs old and has never had one before. So tonight we got her out and I've lifted her up to check her over and under her belly she's got a round open wound it doesn't smell but I'm upset to think I've not noticed anything earlier. I will take her straight to the vets tomorrow but any ideas what this might be? She's never been to the vets before so that's worrying me too :-(
 
It could be a huge number of things. A sebaceous cyst or abscess that has burst or it could be self mutilation due to an internal condition so visiting the vet is obviously very much needed. Tonight I would bathe it in some saline solution to clean her as much as possible and try to reduce the risk of infection and make sure her bedding is nice and clean. Best of luck tomorrow and I hope its something easy to solve

It needs a vet visit to find our what is going on, but you can disinfect the wound with either sterile saline from the pharmacy or by making it yourself; mix 1 teaspoon of salt into 1/2 pint/250 ml of boiled, cooled water.

Thank you she seems so normal in herself if it wasn't for the blood I wouldn't have known.
 
Fudge has a tumour. The vet flushed it out and has been surprised at how good she was. The options were to have it operated on, have her PTS or let her carry on as she is. So we've decided to let her live her remaining days with us as she is. She's still eating etc we are going to bath her in warm salt water every couple of days. I hope you don't think it's cruel but she doesn't seem in pain yet xx

I am really sorry that the news has been bad! There is no right or wrong in these decisions, as long as they are made with your piggy's welfare and quality of life upmost in mind. Each piggy and each bond is different and unique; we also feel differently on this issue. There is no one single right decision for everybody.
If it is any consolation for you, I would have opted for the same in view of her age and the fact that so far she is not in the kind of discomfort that requires pts straight away if it had been one of mine (in fact I have done so in the past).

You will know when the day has come to say goodbye.

Until then, give her as happy and good a life and - while you are sad that the days are numbered and your heart is crying inside - make the best of what is left. Love transcends time; you can pack an amazing amount of it into a moment. Cherish every day! As awful as it is to get the bad news, it also is a wonderful gift to be able to do and say everything you want to. ;)
 
I am sorry :( I think at 6 years old it might be a very difficult operation & if it is malignant you could be putting her through quite a lot of trauma. Cherish every day with her, I lost my 5 1/2 year old piggy in February after she died from a mass in her chest. It's not easy, but you know her best.
 
Thank you for your lovely comments. We lost her little sister last year and wasn't sure about fudge being on her own but she's been so loving and has loved all the attention. We've been so lucky to have had her for 6yrs with today being her first vet visit! She's had a feast for her dinner and is at the hay as I type this. Dandelions for supper. Fingers crossed she'll be with us for a little while longer xx
 
Really sorry for your horrible news, I was really hoping it wasn't due to something internal but I remember having a hamster with a tumour many years back who chewed their own abdomen to try and manage the discomfort. It is a very distressing situation but I think whilst she isn't in pain then allowing her to continue living a happy life in a loving home is the best thing

Do you think sitting her in a bowl of shallow warm salt water every couple of days would be best?
 
Pain relief is the key to keeping her comfy in whatever time she has left, You can ask your vet for Metacam, she should be on a daily dose & Tramodol, which can also be given at the same time. I am so sorry x

Just dunk a cotton pad in some saline solution to gently wipe the open wound once daily should to the trick.
 
Awwww, I'm so sorry. :( It's hard to make decisions when age is a factor. For what it's worth, I also decided against aggressive interventions for my pigs at that age... it's quality over quantity, and I feared that any major operation would diminish their quality of life for their remaining time without adding much (if any) quantity. ((HUGS)) to you, keep on spoiling her!

Thank you x she's having a lukewarm salt bath later, still eating like a little pig lol I feel we have made the right desicion xx

Sounds like she still has a good quality of life, which is great :)

Hi everyone just to let you know little fudge was PTS today she was so well up until yesterday morning when she started to not eat her favourite foods or hay. I'm crying as I type this but I know in my heart we did the right thing. She had another tumour that had opened up and one under her skin at her neck. She was an indoor piggy and we feel so lost as we talked to her all the time. She's burried in the garden beside her sister so they are together again. We won't be having anymore piggies but I will always be thankful to this site x

Oh I'm so very sorry for your loss. Fudge knew she was loved and you have her the best final days. Popcorn free little one.
 
Thanks everyone we hoped we would have had her for a few more months. Our house is just so empty x
 
I am so sorry, she sounded wonderful and what loving slaves you were. You loved her and let her go which is the best you could ever do. Sleep well little one and hugs to you and your family. Xx

I think they must have been I think in my mind I just thought we would have her for longer than a couple of weeks. We felt devastated when we lost her sister a year ago but now it's worse as there's nothing.

I'm so sorry for your loss! It sounds like you gave her a great life and let her pass peacefully when it was her time... couldn't ask for anything more than that. ((HUGS)) to you!
