Hello everyone, as most of you know I lost Duke a few days ago, which now leaves his cage mate Archie on his own, he is absoloutly fine on his own and is eating fine doesnt appear down or unhappy, still popcorns around and is generally himself, he has toys etc in his cage to keep him occupied, although i have found he seems a bit more nervous now he lives alone.

Archie is only just over a year old, and I know it hasnt been long since Duke passed away but I'm wondering if Archie will be better off with a friend or not? Or should I leave him on his own?

I personally don't want anymore than I had which was 6, I have 5 now my 4 girls and Archie, I don't want Archie to be lonely because if he lives for years like my girls have id rather he had a friend and didnt live alone as I don't feel that would be fair on him.

Neutering isn't an option I can't afford that and also don't want to put him through an operation he doesnt need, therefore he cant live with any of my girls for company.

The only problem I do have is that if i get another guinea:

1) Archie lives in a nero 3 and is a fairly big pig and still growing, I can't afford another cage atm so if he gets any bigger it wouldnt be fair to keep them both in there (they do get excercise out of the cage though) I do have a nero 4 which 2 of my girls live in but they have been used to living out in an outhouse all their life which was big so i dont think I could put them in the nero 3 as it would be too small for them just adjust to having lived in large spaces before.

2) Archie used to hump Duke an awful lot, I had to seperate them before Duke passed away because he was crushing him doing it (Duke was very small) and I don't want to get another piggy for him to do the same to, it stressed Duke out a lot.

I need some opinions on what is best for Archie considering all of the above, He also lives in my bedroom so he has interaction from me a lot too. :)

hi if archie is happy on his own and he has other guinea pigs he can see and talk to i would leave him as he is because he may not get on with another boar and you may have to then have 2 boars living seperatly

I tried introducing my year old boar to another and it didn't work, he hated him! They're side by side now and can see and chat to each other, they just can't get at each other through the mesh. They're all different though, yours may love the company.

If you think he seems happy enough and he gets lots of interaction with you, I'd be inclined to leave it for now maybe?

I'd say keep him as a lone piggy! I know you shower your piggies with love and affection, that should be enough x

Apart from cost, just wondering why neutering isn't an option? if you have a good guinea vet, the risks are vastly reduced. Even if you kept him as a lone piggy while you saved up for the op that would be fine. My thinking is that as he is only 1, he potentially has an awful lot of years being by himself. I was very scared of having any of my boys neutered but I did trust my vet and it all turned out fine :) It is so rewarding seeing Georgie so happy now!
