Hi, I noticed yesterday that one of my two guinea pig girls had a patch of hair missing. At first I wondered if the marks were from an over zealous grooming from my other pig, but now wondering if mites could be the cause? Any advice appreciated x

There appears to be two quite clear bite marks there as well. Is there any tension between the pair you have at all? I would pop along to the vet for a correct diagnosis and strong enough treatment to resolve the problem. I would be guessing mites or lice as well

Hi, thanks for replying. They usually get on fine and the other pig is the more submissive. I have a vet appointment booked for tomo so hopefully will know for sure after that x

Its hard with bites but usually if you can see multiple bites and they are caused by the other pig then you will notice tension and fighting. Quite often mites or lice can cause piggies to bite themselves while trying to deal with the itching they cause

Yeah, I'm thinking treatment for mites or similar will be recommended. I've never seen any aggression in them post the initial nips and displays of dominance 8 months or so ago. It worried me because I'd hate to think she was in pain. Thanks again

Good that you have a vets appointment booked. It looks very much like mites but your vet will give a proper diagnosis and prescribe the correct treatment.

The bite marks could be your piggy biting herself due to the itching
