in case anyone has read my 'byebye' thread to Molly, this is fairly unrelated. Molly was put to sleep as she lost significant amounts of weight in a really short period, and had developed a head tilt. the vet thought it was a brain tumour, and we had her put to sleep before she began to actually be pained by it.

[*]Problem Now[/*]

Allie, my other 5 month old guinea pig, seems ill now. looking through things, i think it's bloat/gut stasis. however, from what i've read, this is usually accompanied by the inability to go to the toilet. although she's not gone as much as she usually would, she does still seem able.

i found that she was like this last night, so the vet trip has been booked for in about an hour.

i don't want to lose both my babies within one day of each other 8...

Unfortunately I don't feel I could give any useful advise on this but I do hope your piggie is alright! Please let us know how Allie gets on at the vets xx

I can't help either our experienced medical members don't seem to be on yet! I am sure someone will be here shortly to help.

Is she still eating?

does their tummy sound hollow when you tap the side of their tummy? was told if it sounds hollow it is bloat dont know for dirrernet though

i really hope you piggie pulls though send good vibes your way xx

If her belly is tight, springy and painful, she has probably bloat. If not, it could be an infection in her guts. It may nort have fully developed yet. But you are completely right to take her to the vets immediately; the sooner you get on top of it the better the chance of a recovery.

I'm sending your beautiful little mite my vibes and hope that she can pull though!

Hi Nicquita, what makes you think it could be bloat? In sudden, acute cases the guinea pig will not be eating or moving around (usually sitting hunched and relatively unresponsive), but there are less severe forms where the symptoms are milder - the pig may still be eating and moving around, for example, albeit with a tight, swollen abdomen.

Has Allie been wormed with Panacur and Ivomec at all? Is she still eating?

i thought it may be bloat as my big sister is taking a zoology course at university and is a rat breeder, so knows this kind of thing most of the time. however, as she doesn't have guinea pigs, she's never had to deal with it. i thought her tummy felt tight, but also, i'm just plain paranoid. i got her checked out, and apparently, all is well with Allie, thankfully. i guess i was just a bit 'jump to the worst possible conclusion', due to what happened with Molly yesterday :(

and no, she hadn't eaten for a while, then on the way to the vets, she chomped through all of her greens ¬_¬

Maybe she was just feeling sad after Molly died?

:( as much as it's a sad subject, i'm currently looking in to getting her a friend. i've found a really nice lady quite near to me that has some lovely little piggies at the minute. i feel a bit bad though, as it kinda seems like i'm replacing Mol 8...

I know what you mean. But you are really thinking about what is best for your lonely little girl. You won't replace Molly but maybe seeing Allie happy again will make you feel better.

i know this feeling its awful i had to find a cage mate twice for jake 8...

what you have to think now is what is right for your little one getting them a cage mate is not replacing the piggie you have lost as they will always have a special in your heart & all those good times you had together xx

Molly was a very special piggle. i had five, and they all run away from me. they always have, except Molly. Molly used to get as close to me as she could while she was in her hutch. she loved being picked up and stroked. all i can think about now is that maybe the reason she was so loveable was because of her brain problem

8...

AWW bless Molly she sounds so sweet.

Glad your other piggy is well.

have just collected a friend for Allie. stuck for names though. will post in another section later. she's a cute little cream, and is almost as calm as Molly was :)/:(
