I acquired a 3 1/2 year old female 5 months ago from a friend. No previous health issues. She lives with my other 2 females and 1 male. 10 weeks ago she developed a severe uti. Was on Baytril 3 days then swapped to co-trimoxazole for a 5 day course. 2 days into the co- trimoxazole course her pee turned orange (not oxidisation but excreted like that.)
She spent a day at the vets having tests and scans and everything came back normal. Pees continued to come out orange and dried to a deep rusty brown colour.
We do not have a vet who specialises in exotics where I live and I was told to keep a food diary and encourage drinking.
Her diet is lots of hay, very little pellets (I stopped them for a week but no change to urine colour), and a few vegetables (pepper, cucumber bit of round lettuce), always varied, very little fruit, no kale or spinach.
10 weeks after first uti, she had another, 5 days ago.
Pee was taken from her by the vet and analysed under microscope there was blood and bacteria ( I appreciate not a 'sterilised' sample but it was straight from her and not from a container.)
Orange colour completely disappeared for 4 days but yesterday came back and this morning it is quite dark again.
She is on day 5 of a 10 day course of co-trimoxazole (0.5ml twice a day) and 0.18ml (once a day) of metacam. She weighs 820grams.
She is otherwise eating and moving normally.
Has anyone had a similar experience?
I note from Wiebke's excellent guidenotes for pees and stones that it could be due to bacterial overgrowth, usually caused by suppressed bacteria in the bladder but I'm thinking is this still possible when she's currently on a course of antibiotics? Should she change to Baytril or should I ask for more antibiotics when this course finishes in 5 days? Should I give her vitamin C or glucosamine (which I've never given before)?
Any help/comments/thoughts welcome! I'm really stuck with this one.
