I have a Male guinea pig named Moe. Today I noticed his pee was orange? I wasn't home to be sure it was pee but it's on his white cage fluff. I am not sure of his exact age but we have had him for about 2 years ... not sure how old he was when we bought him from PetSmart. Can anyone help me with this? He eats a cup of kale a day and he has a blueberry or two or carrots as a treat. He seems to be acting normal ... can anyone explain to me what the orange spots are?

Hi!

It is most likely discoloration from veg as you have been serving some strong veg.

Blood doesn't have the same specific weight as urine; they separate out when they dry.
Depending on the amount, you'll see reddish drops in a pee puddle or a reddish ring around a differently coloured puddle.

If you have any concerns, please see a vet.

PS: I would be careful with serving so much kale but no watery veg to help flush out the excess calcium. Please also go very lightly on sugary veg like fruit and carrots - they are not good for a balanced microbiome in the gut.

Thank you for your quick response. I was worried.

I have not recently given him cilantro or peppers. Should I be? Daily?

Yes, to both - cilantro/coriander is the herb least high in calcium but it makes a nice change to kale and provides somewhat different trace elements, as do the other herb. Peppers are high in vitamin C but not as sugary as fruit. If you have the choice between fruit as a treat or fresh herbs, please choose herbs!
You can feed a bit more kale than we recommend in a soft water area as most of the UK is hard water country and bladder stones are a common problem over here.
