Today I noticed that my pig Sundae's urine looked dark- kind of orangey in colour. She was puttering around outside grazing on the clover and had just peed before I picked her up- the big of pee on her fur looked orangish. She seems otherwise fine- no squeaking while going pee, activity and appetite seem normal. Hard to tell what colour the pee in the cage is, since they are on brown Carefresh and it all soaks in. Does this sound like it could be a UTI? Is there anything I can do at home that will help? The soonest I will be able to get to the vet is Tuesday, since tomorrow is Thanksgiving Monday here in Canada and everything is closed. If she does have a UTI, what is the best antibiotic for treating them? Is there one that works best or has less side effects?

Food can have an effect on the colour of urine - it can have a high iron content and when it oxidises when in contact with the oxygen in the air it will turn orange/brown (rust). The presence of porphyrin can also cause pigmentation of the urine.

Food colourant - natural and artificial - can effect the pee, carrots, beetroot, peppers etc.

Food with a high Vit A content (eg dandelions) can cause 'red urine' too and is nothing to worry about.

Unless the discolouration continues or she develops other symptoms of cysitis or stones then I would think it more likely to be a diet related cause.

Thanks! I will keep a close eye on her today... she still seems fine this morning, begging for hay!

I agree with Suzy - discoloured urine is usually not directly linked with UTI; it can have other causes. From your post, I see that you are a very caring owner, so I am sure that you are on the lookout should there be problems.

She seems fine... I haven't really had a chance to see any more of her urine. She is 'potty trained' and goes back into the cage to pee. However she is behaving normally, eating, running around, and wheeking for food, so my fingers are crossed that it was a fluke thing. The pigs had a great weekend- it was Thanksgiving in Canada and we went to the cottage and had uncannily warm weather for October, so the girls got a second summer grazing in the yard!
