Orla- Possible Fungal/ringworm?

We usually recommend imaverol/enilconazole dip, as we have made very good experiences with it. You can find more details for the fungal treatments that we recommend in our ringworm thread. I would not recommend vetsect; I have found imaverol much better, especially in delicate areas. Surolan is a decent all-purpose fungal shampoo; I have used it before I switched to imaverol a few years ago.

I agree on this, but in addition to shampooing. Shampooing to get rid of debris and affected skin flakes before applying the Imaverol dip, which I recommended earlier. I find Imaverol the most effective but wouldn't necessarily use it before prior clearing the coat and skin of fungal flakes and dirt. I wasn't aware Surolan came in shampoo form or that enough was available to combine into a shampoo so that is useful to know.

That's great info to know Laura. I haven't had any dealings with fungal before (and with 16 pigs it was bound to pop up eventually) so any info is greatly appreciated!

Sorry it's took my so long to update! Not stopped since I got home! Orla has been prescribed Suralon for now, as we are unsure about the fungal as there is a small cut in the area too so she's had some metacam and has a 5 day course of baytril just in case of a small infection to the wound and Suralon. She's has a skin scrape down and hairs pulled to culture to 100% check for fungal and they are ordering me some Imevarol (sp?) too. She was as good as gold for the vet, fingers crossed nothing cultures that is too serious as we can get on top of it. Basic quarantine is in place for her, chilli and salsa too just in case.

She isn't sure She's took a sample to grow cultures which she said should show fungal within a few days, but if it doesn't then we also have a sample being sent to the lab. She isn't 100% convinced it's fungal of any type, but she wants to cover the bases.

Ok, it's just that only Ringworm tends to show on a culture so it may be an idea to use the Imaverol even if the culture doesn't show anything.

Yeah I said that to the vet and she agreed, I asked her specifically about others types of fungal than ringworm (thanks to you lot on here).

Orla is doing well. The Suralon seems to be doing the trick, though I have to admit I'm not sure what fungal is supposed to look like when it's improving. The dry scaly skin has gone and it's just clear skin now with a tiny bit of redness. Still no scratching or other patches which is a good sign.

That's great that it is helping. Did you say you were getting Imaverol aswell? if so this will make sure that she is treated all over and should help prevent any other patches appearing?

Yes I have Imaverol on order from the vets, just waiting for a phone call to say its come in :)

Is this usually the process with fungal, where the skin 'clears' of sorts. It's just clea slightly blotchy skin now.

Ah good, I tend to get my threads confused if there are a few similar ones. Lots of fungal about at the mo. I have never had the crusty bits with fungal in my own pigs so can't say for certain but yes I think that is the case. Have a look at the Ringworm guide as Wiebke has detailed the different stages of it.

Thanks Helen. I have the guide saved to my comp at home, I keep perusing over it. Its good to know the processes when it's something that you haven't dealt with before. :)

Hello!

So, we've been treating Orla topically with the Suralon and the patch has cleared. No other patches have occurred but her and her group are still in quarantine. Vet has confirmed it's ringworm and finally got some Imaverol so we are going to dip them all as well as continuing to disinfect everything in their setup with F10.

What is the recommended ratio of Imaverol to water for guinea pigs? The vet said for rabbits they reccomend 1 part to 50 parts water. What do you all find works? It is advisable to bath first and rinse and then do the dip? Thanks!

I do 10ml to 1.1lires of water but that was recommended to me and doesn't fit with what it says in the bottle. I also dip once a week for 4 weeks.

Thank you Helen. I've done the dips for today, found one of your previous suggestions on here using the search :) All 3 pigs done and cage disinfected again along with everything in it. I will do what you suggested once a week for four. Thanks for the info! :D

I use 1ml to 50mls water. With Fudgebutt I used to use a toothbrush and syringe first, so I could use it directly on the fungal patch and once I'd given that a good but gentle scrub I'd dip him in the rest of the solution. I applied topically every other day for a week then as Helen does once every week for a 4 weeks to really make sure it had gone :)

We've been treating the patch topically for almost 2 weeks and it has completely cleared, we are dipping now to stop the spread and kill any spores left anywhere :)
