Firstly his age - he's 4 months, is that too young? I know my vet will do it from then if he's developed enough. He's 650g - is that heavy enough for his age do you think?

He's become crazy for the girls today - he's going mad trying to get to them, biting the bars and trying to dig his way over. I feel for the poor boy! He's doing the usual rumbling but that's all Mork did - Orson is like a man possessed. I want to get him the op asap so I can put him out of his misery sooner.

I'm sure someone with more recent experience will be along soon, but I will say when we had Hughie (dearly departed darling he was) neutered he was just over 4months and my vet went on how developed he was as opposed to age so much. Sorry not sure abot weight.

I've had two pigs neutered at 3-4 months (this is going back 6 years now), and one neutered at 6 months. I've adopted a pig who was neutered at an estimated age of 3-4 years.

I believe the optimal age for neutering is anywhere from 6-18 months, to quote the CCT.

Remember the main risk involved and ask yourself if the operation is really necessary.

Hi Lisa

It's possible one of the girls is on heat today hence why he's gone crazy. Female piggies can be little tykes when they're randy - Pebble used to flaunt her bottom to all comers :)

There ARE risks to neutering as with any surgery - anaesthetic/post-op abcesses/adhesions/impaction - and it also depends upon the skill of your vet (find out how many they have done and the results) - I would wait a couple of months as 4 months is a bit young.

However, if you don;t intend for him to live with your sows permanently then it may be that the periodic craziness is oK vs the risks of neutering - (but bear in mind that male piggies will do anything to reach a female pig on heat - my Tigger actually cleared a 14" wall one night malletheadmallethead)

Mork is booked in for next week.

I am using a vet I used to do the last one which was about 2 months ago - maybe a tiny bit more. he's very experienced and Morks op was so clean and it looked like nothing had been done. I'm hoping for the same with Orson.

I DO intend for him to live with the girls. He's been there next to them for a month now and in that time I am sure each of them (there are 6) have been in season at least once but he's not been interested. Now he's mad for them. I couldn't leave him on his own and only took him in if he could be neutered.

I have a check up first and if the vet decides that he's not ready he'll tell me then. I hope he is as I want him to be in there asap.

He can't get to the girls, the grids do all the way to the top of the cage. He's totally safe where he is - much to his disgust!

best of luck for mork! Jive took very little notice of the girls until he got in with them and now it is constant rumblestrutting!

Remember that Orson is at his most hormonal right now - the big hormones usually kick in at this age, so it's quite likely for him to go overboard when one of the females has a strong season right now.

With so many girls to chase after, you will eventually only notice the stronger seasons. But brace yourself for Orson going bonkers for a day or two at first (and it is neither a nice sight nor a nice smell...).

Best of luck for the op!

Mork doesn't either and Mork is so mild mannered. Orson smells already! I am not looking forward to him going in. Pity he's in the living room cage!

Some boys are worse than others; but a boy in full flow can produce an amazing cloud of concentrated testosterone! It's mainly in his pee which he liberally sprays everywhere!

When Llewelyn came to live with Dizzy, he went completely bonkers for two full days and you had the choice of either gagging or freezing from keeping the window open!
