On Sunday I noticed one of my girls wasn't moving as well as normal, her back legs seemed stiff and she was lying down more than usual. I took to the forums as we do and read a few cases that sounded pretty similar where Osteocare Liquid had been given as instructed by Peter Gurney. I got some of this and started Grace on it on Monday evening.

Now she wasn't as bad as some of the cases I read (total paralysis in back legs), it was more like her pelvis was stiff so she couldn't walk easily. The Osteocare liquid seems to have done a great job but I'm unsure how long to use it for.

She had 1ml x2 in the first 24 hours and 0.5ml x2 every 24 hours for a further 3 days so far. Should I carry on for a couple more days or stop now and see how she does without it?

She has shown no signs of pain or injury and is eating normally.

Thanks in advance.

I can't help, hopefully someone with experience will be along soon, but I will be watching this thread with interest as my bladder piggy definitely has pain in her back legs from arthritis & I have upped her daily dose of Metacam until we see the vet next week & I am going to ask her about Osteocare then :) Can I ask where you can get it from please? x

I got it from Boots. £3.69 for 200ml. Might have a few swigs myself!

I wanted to try this before seeing the vet as she wasn't in pain and they are very keen on just giving metacam to solve everything. Obviously your piggy needs it for the other issues.

Yes she has a sludgy bladder & has had a lot of treatment over the last 3 years & I have a massive stack of receipts as a result lol :) She has a very low dose, 0.1 ml once or twice a day for it's anti-inflammatory properties & Cartrophen injections once a month, she is getting on (5 years old) & when I wash her bottom bits she doesn't like her back legs being touched too much :( Her x-rays over the years did show arthritis in them, so I do think it's likely to be that. Someone on here has been using Osteocare for her sow, have you tried searching as you might find her thread :) It may have been piggyfan xx @Elwickcavies @helen105281

Hi. I understand that you would want to discuss painkiller use with your vet and you are right not to leap in but all I can say is that my own experience with little Grover who was very arthritic was that regular metacam made a big difference to his mobility. Also avoiding temperature fluctuations - if he got at all cold he seized up so i was super careful about his temp. Hope she starts moving more freely.

Thanks ladies.
I had searched Poppy'sMum but it seems I had spelt it wrong :/ so have now read some more threads :)

Lauraboara, the piggies are inside so the temperature doesn't change much but I can imagine the cold would contribute to any stiffness.

Grace is 2 which I thought would be a bit young for arthritis but maybe I'm thinking of her like a human too much :)

Please make sure that she is getting seen by a vet; full or partial back leg paralysis can have various causes (like arthritis or neurological ones), so home treatment on spec with osteocare does NOT replace a vet visit, nor does giving painkiller on spec!
