My poor little maisy,
weeeeks ago i noticed a small sore on her tummy, the vet gave me some hibbyscrub to clean it with each day. and it seemed to be getting better.
When i was on holiday my sister (who was looking after them for me) rung and told me maisy has some sores on her back. I suspected them to be as small as the ones that were on her tummy. But when i returned home i was horrified at what i saw!
(they look worse in real life than they do in photos)

But i took her to the vets this morning and they say its most likeley just mites and that it is very common. She has some medicene to take and has got to go back to the vets next week and the week after for some drops or somthing.
So she should be much better soon! :D xx

Yep looks like a bad case of mites. What medicine was it? Nothing but ivermectin works.

the medicine is Baytril, the vet said its really good stuff and should clear it up well. But she is also having drops from the vets which i have got to go in 2 more times for, I'm not sure what that is called though.

invermectin works alot beter than baytril. obviously run the course but if still not cleared, ask you vet for ivermectin!

poor little maisy, hope she feels better soon

Baytril is an antibiotic and only works for certain types of infections, ivermectin either by injection or topical xeno 450 needs to be used.

That looks pretty sore so you could use a soothing cream such as bepanthen nappy rash cream 48 hours after ivermectin or email Chrissie at gorgeous guineas with those pics and she can also advise a soothing cream.

okay, if it does not clear up then i will ask about invermectin. :D
But hopefully it will get much better soon. it has spread onto my other piggy (mandy)but luckily she is not half as bad and only had a very small patch on her back. However she is having the same treatment as maisy.

Personally, I wouldnt wait...this is very sore for the pig and your other pig will need ivermectin too. They can start fitting if it is left and it is much harder to treat then also.

I dont know much about medicines , so i thought what the vet is giving me would have been okay, otherwise i would have asked about the other stuff.
Next Monday she will be going back to the vets, and its a better vets (that i usually go to) than i went to today (as there was no appointments left). So hopefully they will give me invermectin =]

I agree with LavenderJade. Phone the vets and explain that you want Ivermectin not Baytril. Baytril clears infections. Ivermectin is treatment for mites. Clean the wound with some warm salt water and then put a layer of vaseline over the wound so nothing can irritate it. If anything gets stuck to the vaseline it can then be wiped away. The other option would be to use spray on savlon which contains iodine and this will protect the wound. Please do not leave this untreated until Monday.

I imagine the drops you've mentioned are indeed Ivermectin did she have these at your initial visit also

Well I'm not sure what the drops were called that the vet put on her, But maybe that was Invermectin?..are Invermectin drops then, or is it medicine?, she put it on her back.

Also what can i put on the sore patches to sooth it? like a cream that i have around the house? I did ring the vet and ask but they just said clean it with hibbyscrub, but that wasn't what i meant, any suggestions?

Ivermectin can be administered in drops or via injection as for an appropriate cream I'd email your pic to gorgeous guineas and see what they recommend

Oh good well the drops they gave were most likely Invermectin then, Well i hope so because i have been worried all day about my piggies!
But i will ask at my next appointment to check. and if there sores seem to be getting worse i will make a vet appointment sooner, But they don't look any worse today =]

Yes, ring the vet and ask what the drops were for. Most probably they were ivermectin, in the form of Xeno (pronounced Zeno), ask your vet if this is what it was.
Because the bald patches look very sore the vet may have given baytril to prevent any infection. Can't say I disagree with this.

I know you probably want to trust your vet and go along with what they say, but whenever one of my guineas gets an illness I'm not sure about I fill with dread, because if I don't know about it, chances are the vet doesn't have a clue either. Vets are rubbish with small animals. (unless they are rodentologists, very few are)

I agree with the others about checking with the vet what was administered. Get on the phone first thing tomorrow about it, don't assume. My vet gives you an invoice with exactly what was administered on it.

With sores as bad as those in the pictures you don't want to take the chance that it might not be ivermectin. Please give them a call.

I agree with the others. Baytril is for administered to treat infections and that doesn't look like an infection. It looks like mange or a fungal case ... and it must be very unpleasant for your piggie.

Please do phone or call into your vets asap to check what has been given to your piggie. Voice yours and our concerns.

Please keep us posted and has also been said above, do check whether her companions should be receiving treatment also to prevent re-infection.

I am keeping a very close eye on my piggies and i care for them sooo much, but i feel like people are thinking badly of me on here now =[
I will ring the vet tomorrow and ask what treatment they are giving them.
My other piggy is also getting the exact same treatment as maisy.
Thanks for all your advice everyone x

I can assure you no one is thinking badly of you, we just all love piggies and are offering advice that we have gained through owning pigs of our own, next time a similar situation occurs with another member you too will impart the info you've gained through this experience:)

no one thinks badly of you, you obviously care for your pigs to come on here and ask advice, but you do need to ring the vet. good luck :)

Hannah, please don't think that we think badly of you. We all have times when we are unsure and we like to help each other (and the piggies) as best we can :)

aww,i just saw these pics, had me in tears, the poor thing. my girls had lice and mites at the same time and had that injection three times, really cleared it up. x
