Hi, I am new to this forum. I wondered if anyone has any ideas as to why a healthy 3 year old guinea would all of a sudden start losing weight even though he is perky/eating/drinking/pooing normally ? I have had this happen to one of my guineas about a year ago same situation, I took her to the vet and we examined her mouth to check for any sign of a problem but nothing was detected, She ended up with no weight on her and eventually died. I don't want this to happen to this guinea (his name is Monty).

Any advice much appreciated - thanks, from Caron.

hi, are you taking monty to the vets?

could be a number of things really, do you weigh regularly so you know how much weigh loss and at what rate etc, could be worth doing?

How much weightloss?

If a pig is losing weight, they need to see a vet. Weightloss is the first sign of illness.

There are far to many possible illnesses, a though diagnosis with a good Cavy Savy is necessary.

Hi, thank you for your reply. I will take him to the vet although with past experience the vet will be baffled too, and will only be able to prescribe me medicines with a hit or miss result as with my last guinea this happened to.

The strange thing is he is so perky and active in himself no signs at all ! like I said drinking and eating/pooing normally/bright eyed - just skinny ! I had just hoped someone had experienced exactly the same thing.

I'll take him to the vets today, but I know the vet won't know either what is going on. Just random tests to do on poor Monty, and I worry time will run out on us.

Anyway he is a very much loved pet, and he is getting special attention from me with extra cuddles which he loves.

Many thanks
Caron

Hi Caron

If you could give your location there may be a vet that could be recommended, as a cavy savvy vet can make all the difference.

have you wormed your piggie? 0.4ml panacur every three months. Otherwise i would be watching VERY closely what he is eating. You can give plain oats to help bulk him up. It may be that he's not actually eatin as much as you think he is. Definitely get him to a savvy vet though dont go to the same one again. I think there are members on here from Weston and bristol that may know one x x x
