Hello!

I’m looking for advice on outdoor hutches for my piggies. I have two boars whose bond broke a while ago now, and are living completely separate. I’m thinking of moving them outside due to limited space indoors to accommodate two cages. I would need an outdoor hutch suitable for one piggy, and I’ll be buying two of them to have next to eachother along with thermal covers.

Thankyou

Unfortunately, Hutches don’t work at all well for separated piggies.

Due to the solid sides of a hutch, there is no easy way to position them to allow the piggies to constantly be able to see each other and fully interact between bars. Once hutch covers go on it further means they will lose all contact with each other and given covers potentially won’t come off even during the day in winter, they could go months without interaction and companionship.
This would result in loneliness.
Piggies can only see around 30cm in front of themselves so even if the hutches were facing each other (which would make things very hard to work with), or even positioned in a L shape together, they would still be too far away to be able to interact with each other (and again once the covers are on, all interaction would be lost).

The only real workaround involves a lot of diy (or a carpenter to help). The solid side of each hutch would need to be removed and replaced with mesh. The hutches then pushed together so the two mesh sides are touching thus meaning the piggies can see each other at all times.
But it does still make things tricky when hutch covers are put over as they then lose interaction again.
You would have to be careful not to weaken the structure of the hutch or allow any weak point that predators could take advantage of when making such modifications
Or having a minimum of an 8-10ft hutch custom made (you can’t buy one of that size) so it has a mesh divider in the middle.
Each piggy needs a minimum of a 4ftx2ft enclosure.

My last two remaining boys have a broken bond so are separated. Fortunately they live in a shed but they have had to go in a c&c cage in there (which still comes with its own issues) so they can still interact 24/7. (Originally it was a hutch but it just didnt work once they fell out and my other pair passed away)
