Its draughts that cause piggies the most problems, rather than the actual cold itself. If you can place the hutch in the most sheltered part of the garden. Make sure they have plenty of bedding and a thick layer of newspaper helps to insulate also. I cover my hutch front with a carpet and tarpaulin but if you are really worried you can cover the whole thing with silver loft insulation from a DIY shop.
Mine are outside in the Rabbitshak RS201 I also bought the cover with the hutch & when the weathers bad They get zipped up inside to keep them warm & dry. I did have every intention of removing the cover but the weathers been so awful lately I've left it on.
Mine have a vinyl sheet each with permantly lives on the top and when weather is windy, too sunny, cold etc etc we just role it down to protect them, then when its nice again we role it back up. But piggys live in the utility room in the winter months.
I noticed P@H sell the vinyl covers that you can just roll up and down when needed. Our piggies will be going outdoors once they are settled and i will be buying one. A neighbour uses them and she's had no problems. I'm too scared to put a full cover over it incase the weather heats up while we're at work. That happened to us last time and we nearly killed our girls as they overheated :embarassed:
South facing gardens aren't always a good thing! :-\
