Hi,

We are getting two sows on saturday and have everything ready, they are going to be indoor piggies:)

we have one problem which my husband pointed out, we have a dog and he obviously goes to the toliet on the grass and hubby said it's best not to put them in a run on the grass as it wouldn't be hygienic for them and I agree.

Is an outdoor run on the grass essential or could we have the run indoors and occasionally put thier cage outside for some fresh air supervised

thanks:))

I wouldn't say its essential but it can be nice for piggies to get out in the fresh air. My girls aren't on grass, when they go out they are on paving as we also have a dog, then we bring some grass to them.

Indoor exercise would be ok, you could plant some grass in little tubs so the guineas can have a chomp on them when in the 'run'. It's nice for them to get out every so often. I love mine going out on the grass but in this country there isn't that much opportunity for it. The weather needs to be warm and the ground dry - which doesn't happen often :) So they have to make do with picked grass a lot of the year anyway. Could you section a bit of grass off so the dogs don't have access to it, then once it is all clean the pigs could go out?

I wouldn't say it's a must that they go outdoors, I'm sure there are alot of owners who don't have outdoor space available for them to be put out in any sort of run. We have an outdoor run for ours though it's not very often that the can go out because of weather conditions. As long as they have plenty of room indoors to stretch their legs that should be fine, rather that then risk them picking something up from where your dogs been to the loo :)

I don't think its really a big issue. My dogs pee all over the garden, and its never done the pigs or bunnies any harm, their runs are rotated daily. I guess the rain washes it away. Or you could keep the run in one place, and the dog wouldn't be able to pee where it is!

It really is lovely for pigs to have grass, they just love it so much!
