Hi, I live in a terraced house with only a concrete yard but really wanted to provide my guinea girls with a bit of grass outside occasionally. I had an idea of growing some from turf in a large trough and placing my 'toblerone' shaped run on it. My question to any gardeners out there is 'do you think this is feasible, can you grow turf in a container using topsoil underneath?
 
@Dianet Yep. I live in a terraced house too with just a small garden. I grow grass in seed trays. I use grass seeds but a strip of turf should work just as well and give the piggies access to grass quicker than having to wait for it to grow.
 
That sounds like a great plan to try next summer! We have a small terraced house with a patio no grass so I grow clover in seed trays on top of the hutch :) how would you secure the run to the trough though? Tent pegs or something?
Or... (light bulb moment) when the piggies move into their big 2 tier indoor cage this autumn I could use the base of the old cage to grow a minature lawn for them!
 
@PigglePuggle that is a great idea. Don't expect your piggies to go running up and down the ramp in their new Piggie Palace straight away. It took my lot around 6 months to use it properly and now only 2 or 3 go up to the top level at any one time. It is good to have when Piggies feel they need "time out". I grow grass seed it trays, it works well for me.

wow! it looks so effective and yummyXD:wub: my pigs have the garden to eat grass from but i would like to try it for their cage and run:nod:
 
Yes it will work, or you can grow seeds in trays etc and place them in the run, they will enjoy that!

Yes we also have large garden and grass runs but I like the grass in trays as it means I can bring it to them if it’s raining :nod:
 
Thanks for all your replies. I did grow grass seed in trays last year for them but they demolished it in one sitting. I was looking for something more permanent that I could leave outside and it would keep on growing. I've put a photo of the trough and run on so you can get an idea of what I'm talking about, but thought I'd ask before I bought the soil and turf. Do you think it will be deep enough for the turf to root and are there any things I should do before laying the turf? Also is B & Q turf safe for guineas to feed on?20180624_164149.webp
 
We have no grass for our piggies but this thread has inspired me to convert one of our raised beds into grass!
