Hi. I am new to the site so firstly hello everybody :)

I am having problems with my sows and ovarian cysts. Sadly I lost two of my girls last year post op following being spayed and scared to put another one through this ordeal. I have two girlies at the mo with cysts. My four year old doesn't have any symptoms and her cysts were picked up on a scan whilst looking at another issue. My 2 1/2 year old however bleeds every month when it appears she is in season but the bleeding stops after a day or two. I have enquired about alternative treatments to spaying ie hormone injections and or implants.
Unfortunately I live on an island and there are no vets here who particularly specialise in guinea pigs but my vets are very good and are trying to look into alternatives for me. I have however had some conflicting info back so thought I would ask for advice from other owners who have had to go through this themselves and ask if they have any good advice they could pass on/share.
My vets have said they would get the above drug (ovarelin) in for me but there is only a 1 in 5 chance of success. I asked again about implants but they think this is too drug heavy in comparison to the other and once the implant is in it can't be removed.

Hi bubbywubwubs & welcome to the forum. Unfortunately I have no experience of Ovarelin, all my cystic sows have been given jabs of Chorulon, so I am not sure if this is a different hormone treatment. I have heard of implants but don't know how successful they are. My sows have had their cysts drained when they were very large, then given the injections afterwards; usually 3 injections sort the cysts although they can come back. If your vet is not experienced they may not be skilled enough or even willing to drain the cyst first (Usually only done if the cyst is very big). Have you considered contacting Jersey Zoo to see if they have an Exotics vet there who is able to see them & advise? It might be worth a try? I've never had a sow spayed & have had 50% of mine with cysts all successfully treated with the jabs :)

Sorry I can't be of much help!
I have no experience of ovarian cysts because if I rehome a sow, they are routinely spayed (my boy piggies have health issues and can't be neutered).
I agree with the suggestion re Jersey Zoo/Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust. My previous exotics vet Alberto Rodriguez Barbon has moved there - he's very knowledgeable about piggies.
Alternatively (as I'm not sure how easy it is to talk to the zoo vets) you could try Ian Cox at the New Era practice

I too only have experience of Chorulon injections.

Sarnia Guinea pig rescue look like they are in Guernsey, it may be an idea to ask them who their vet is as they were talking about their veterinary team on Facebook last night. I would have thought they would have had at least 1 sow with cysts in the history of the rescue.

Thank you. I am already in regular touch with the rescue and have adopted four piggies from them. Wonderful work he / founder does. We mainly use the same vet so have already discussed this with them. Thanks again
