Ovarian Cysts, can anyone offer advice?

Thank you all. They are fairly confident she has been eating but as she has Butters in with her they wanted to make sure - As she is quite a nervous pig she is far more likely to eat with him there to support her.

I'm actually feeling a bit better - its amazing what a good meal will do.

Thank you all for the good wishes, its great to have all your support.

Bed is beckoning, I will keep you posted tomorrow.

Well, she is back with is after her op :)

I can't believe how much smaller she looks, the cysts must have been huge.

She does look a little bit dazed, but it's been a very long and stressful couple of days for her. She is on metacam, but not antibiotics which I was expecting, is this normal?

She is eating - she's had lettuce and is chewing on hay - but perhaps not as much as I would like. She will be having her normal veggies shortly, if she doesn't have enough then it may have to be some syringe food as we have to keep her strength up, especially over these first few days.

Is there anything else I should know or should be doing?
 
We decided to lay off the syringe food this evening. She has eaten from her food bowl and hay, although she did leave some veggies, but then so did Butters, so we are wondering if they are tired out - there routine has been completely different - early start Wednesday, long drive,staying at a strange place, big op, syringe fed by strangers, long drive home.

I would have liked to see her eat more veg, but the fact I have seen her eating and she is doing plenty of pooping makes me think shes getting enough.

We will decide in the morning whether we syringe feed her then or not. The last thing I want to do is get complacent.
 
So glad it went well, sorry I missed this thread yesterday.

Would suggest keeping her weighed daily while recovering, will give you a good idea of what is going in. Lots of healing vibes to her
 
Am glad the op went well. As Sport Billy says, keeping a close eye on her weight is important. Also make sure you keep up the pain relief and call the vets straight away if you think she is in pain on the dose she has been given. Also keep an eye on poo and pee output aswell as how much she is eating.
 
Glad all is going o.k - It is quite usual to send them home without antibiotics after a spay - just keep up with the metacam,as she will be less likely to eat if she is in discomfort - as long as she is pooing that's good.You should see a marked improvement within the next 3 / 4 days - after 10 days my Poppet was back to normal and bonded to a randy old boar who was mounting her every 5 mins!
 
Thank you all - she perked up yesterday after her metacam. How long does this last? We have to give 0.27ml once a day, but I am aware that Guinea Pigs have a quick metabolism, so I don't want it to wear off in 12 hours and she spends half the day in pain.

She is back in with Butters already, as he is neutered is isn't very 'keen' at the best of times. He is actually giving her a bit of space - he is probably shocked because this is the first time in weeks that she hasn't been pestering him - those cysts were really getting her in the mood!

I did give her some syringe food this morning, although she actually took it without needing to syringe it, which was a big relief as we always thought she would play up!

I will start weighing this evening. Our bowl is round, so I am taking a good box home that will have a flat bottom so she isn't at an angle.
 
You can give her a dose of metacam every 8 hrs - if she is over a kilo in weight and she is in a lot of pain you can go up to o.4 (this is what my vet advised for Bumble ) but 0.27 / 0.3 should be fine - use it for as long as you think she needs it - I gave mine for 6 or 7 days - it wont hurt.Glad to hear she is doing well
 
Thanks TAN - I think she is doing well - I am a very big worrier though. Thanks for the advice on the metacam as well - she does appear to be in pain so we shall give it morning and evening over the next few days.

Obviously we are being as delicate as possible when handling her, but I'm worried about 'breaking' or tearing anything inside her, is this a genuine concern or am I being silly?

We have weighed her today but I am still concerned about how much she is eating. I have seen her eating veg, and hay and she has taken a bit of syringe food. Also what could be signs of dehydration? We havent seen her drink but her veggies are very well rinsed, and she is alert in herself and energetic when she wants to be.
 
We always dose metacam morning and evening to keep the pain relief around the clock so to speak, splitting the daily dose.

If the veggies are well rinsed she will be getting water. We manage to get our girls drinking from the syringe by making up some water and avipro plus probiotic, you know then that you can get some more water into them that way. The syringe food is wet also. Keep an eye on her weight it should be stable form one day to the next, top her up with the syringe feed if she is dropping. Is she eating hay?
 
You can also syringe feed water - you could add a little unsweetened cranberry juice to it (like ocean spray ) to make it a little more appealing - My boar Bumble is not a big drinker (which probably contributed to his bladder sludge and kidney stone - but will happily take 3 or 4 syringe fulls of water at a time -) as will both his wife pigs - they love being syringed water - much less effort than having to suck at a bottle - lazy things!
 
when i was training to be a vet nurse, i saw this very problem, oc in a 5 year old, owner did not op for spaying her, her cysts were drained, she got the implant unfortunately it did not work, they drained the cysts 3 more times, then they never grew back she is in the clear, thats been 7 months now, i would op for draining if she will stand it, and implant its worth a shot, and she how she goes, good luck, keep me informed i would love to here how she does x

We weighed her Friday evening @ 972g and Saturday evening @ 971g, so I would assume the fact her weight is stable, would indicate that she is eating enough. Obviously that is only 1 day, so we be weighing her every day until we are sure she is ok.

I syringe fed her Friday evening, during the night Friday and Saturday morning before I went to work. However on Saturday my girlfriend said she was eating at her bowl, eating hay and even drinking from her bottle. She hates water from a Syringe - she will gladly take metacam and even syringe food but not water. I have got some Cranberry Juice (unsweetened) so will try that. I also wonder if it was too cold out of the tap so will try some boiled water that has cooled down.

Today she has been eating from her bowl and hay as well, and we had a check up this morning and the vet was pleased with how she is healing, she also upped the Metacam dose slightly and advised us to split it into 2 doses if it wears off too soon. She also gave us some Zantac to make sure her guts keep moving. Unfortunately the vet trips these days does mean about and 3.5 hour round trip which does stress her out a little bit, but we take Butters to keep her company and they are a good vets so it is is worth it.

boarding service - we opted for a spay in the end. We did try the hormone implant with our old vet, but our new vets has read new research indicating they are almost certainly ineffective and they no longer offer them as an option. They definitely weren't working in our Sow, as they were increasing in size. I was actually hoping she would drain them - which she said she would - but she thought due to the size of them they would fill up again in a matter of weeks, so we went for a spay. I'm pleased we did, even if it did cause me plenty of worry, stress and angst in the run up!

So, her weight is picking up - we are up to 1.033kg which is up from 0.971kg on Saturday.

I'm still worried (as I always do) as I don't actually see her eating (Sunday I did) - when we are in the room she spends a lot of time in her bed and I do see her munching Hay on the ground, and she is still being tempted out to get her veggies. She really doesn't like us picking her up at the moment, and can give us the run around if we are not careful, so she has plenty of energy and is very alert. She has to come out twice a day to have metacam and the vet has asked us to give her Zantac alongside just to help her guts along.

Is it possible to put on that much weight without eating? Given that she has just been spayed and Butters is neutered - she could not be pregnant!
