I noticed a few days ago that my piggy Vivi (she's quite old, at least six years) wasn't eating well, so I got her to the vet, who said there didn't seem to be anything wrong with her teeth but that she was sensitive around where her ovaries are. She told us to try pain medication for a few days, so we've been giving her that and Critical Care.
She perked up a bit (she's still quite alert), but still wasn't eating normally and didn't poop until this morning, so we took her back today. The vet did an ultrasound and said she had multiple ovarian cysts. Because of her age she said spaying was very risky (and expensive). She said something about a hormone implant but said it was often ineffective. She also said because of hormonal cycles the pain might be an on-and-off thing, and suggested we leave the cysts alone and continue pain management and Critical Care if she wasn't eating.
Since then Vi's perked up and eaten a bit of hay and grass, but I'm worried about the cysts growing or other complications, and the vet didn't mention any other treatment options. Also, I'm in Canberra, Australia, and as far as I'm aware this is the best small animal vet we can get to. Do you think what the vet suggested is the best option, or are there others we should know about?
