Ovarian Cysts, with no visible symptoms?

I am just wondering if female piggies can have ovarian cysts without the usual symptoms, hair loss, large crusty nipples and hormonal behaviour?

I have just had Toffee out for cuddles and a check over and felt a large round lump on her left side and a smaller longer one on her tight side, she is still eating me out of house and home and her normal self.

Minnie has had ovarian cysts a for 2-3 years now, without treatment, but to begin with she had the usual symptoms.

Toffee is 2.5 years old, same age Minnie was when she started.

I am going to get toffee to the vets one day this week.

A vet once told me that, beyond a certain age, it's a case of 'how many' cysts rather than whether a sow has them. So, I guess the only sows that get investigated for cysts are the ones that show symptoms. I definitely think that a sow can have cysts without obvious symptoms.
 
Its possible - any change in behavior more dominance? Humping, rumbling etc...?
 
No nothing atall Lee, not like Minnie, she turned into a terror, Toffee is her usual self.

I hope its nothing more serious..... I know what I am dealing with with ovarian cysts. Xx
 
Chloe, I'm sure its nothing to worry about. Just a quick once over at the vets wont hurt - Put your mind at rest. You are always so on the ball with your pigs and they have an MOT at Jan's often. x
 
This is why I am worried, they only went about 4/5 weeks ago and unless she didn't check, she didn't mention them. But yes until the vets tell me otherwise, I am going to assume it is OC. Xx
 
Will keep everything crossed for Toffee, have a hug and give Toffee a cuddle from me and Rach. I hate feeling lumps and bumps. Let us know when you get your apt x x
 
I don't want to hijack your thread toffeewoffee, but how have you dealt with Cysts in the past?

Our Piggie Marie has them and it's worrying me silly. She has symptoms - she is rounder than normal, crusty nipples, bald patches and occasional rumbling towards her cage mate (who is male), but we don't know what to do. She is happy in herself munching away like normal, but she does appear to occasionally be in pain or at the very least uncomfortable. She responded fairly well to hormone injections and we gave her an implant, but 8 weeks later, it doesn't seem to have taken effect, although the bald patches do seem to have regrown.

We have recently changed vets to an exotic specialist and we have discussed her and the cysts, and she is due to see Piggie Marie tomorrow, but I am sure she will advise that we spay her. She is 5, she is my little girl amongst all the boars we have and I can't bare the thought of her not pulling through.

I have heard of people leaving them, but we have been weighing her over the past few weeks and she has been steadily increasing in weight, so I feel they will only get bigger. Is it possible to have them drained, or is that only a short term solution?
 
Whilst I've only got limited experience with ovarian cysts, I'd certainly not want to have a sow spayed again, unless absolutely necessary. I had a 4 year old spayed, and she was never the same again - in particular, she was very skinny from then on.

Hi, Yes my eldest Sow is is nearly 5 years old has had them for 2 - 3 years, when they first started she had all of the symptoms, hair loss on her sides and general hair thinning all over, crusty nipples and she was very grumpy with all of her friends, but in the last couple of years this has stopped completely, she has normal fur and her nipples sometimes need cleaning up a little but very rarely, and they dont seem to have grown hardly atall, and this is without any treatment, due to her age and tiny size, but she is still happy and healthy.
