Do all female guinea pigs get ovarian cysts if they're not spayed? I have a six month old guinea pig (I'm not planning on getting others after her -- as I can't be sure of my finances in the future) (she does have a three year old friend). My vet told me all sows get cysts if not spayed.
Not only do I not want to put her through the surgery -- but I can't afford to either. Is there any prevention?

No they don't all get them. I did wonder if the sow has had a litter whether that lessens the chance but I have one sow that has had 2 litters before I adopted her & she suffers from cysts anyway. Out of all my piggies over the years I have only ever had females & around 50 % of them have had cysts at some point, all have been treated with hormone injections & none of them ever needed to be spayed.

Ovarian cysts are quite common in older sows, but in most cases, they are not causing any problems.
