Ovarian Cysts?

I don't have a guinea pig with one, but I'm wondering, is it always neccesary to do surgery for ovarian cysts? Sicne I've read that they ususally don't cause any complications? Does spaying at a late age help against that at all? When I say late I mean 2-3-4 years old.
 
I would never spay a guinea pig just to prevent ovarian cysts as it is major surgery. I have had six sows and only one had ovarian cysts so it does not mean all sows get them. Please try not to worry. Many sows with ovarian cysts are treated well with injections.
 
While many older sows have ovarian cysts, it is actually very much a minority where they cause problems; there is also not the link with cancer that there is in rabbits.
Spaying surgery is a major operation and it comes with major risks. I have so far had one successful op (emergency because of the womb going wrong) and one where the piggy didn't wake up. I would not recommend having it unless really necessary and certainly not as a preventative measure, unless you have a very, very good and experienced vet!

There are now thankfully alternative and much less invasive treatments available (hormone injections or draining).
