I think my Guinea pig has ovarian cysts. She has crusty growths on her nipples and one nipple is slightly swollen (I attached a photo). She also is aggressive towards other Guinea pigs and is always chasing and trying to mount other Guinea pigs (because of this my girls are separated and share a wall of grids). I’m going to get her a vet appointment but I was wondering if someone has had experience with ovarian cysts and what the treatment looked like? Also if anyone has any info on the costs of treatment that would be awesome.

Hi and welcome

Good that you are planning a vet trip.

Here is our guide to ovarian cysts and possible treatment options. The link gives a bit of an overview but it very much depends on the country and and the actual findings of your vet (i.e. whether the womb is also affected or not). Hormone treatment for instance is more popular in the USA than in the UK and ovariectomies (just the removal of the ovaries from smaller incisions at the back) have become the preferred operation method compared to a full spay, as long as the womb is not affected.

PS: Is just the nipple badly swollen or is there a firm lump underneath the nipple (potential mammary tumor)?

Tips For Post-operative Care

I have had several of my sows spayed over the years and they have all made a good recovery, thanks to me having access to a good operating vet.

Wishing you all the best.

Hope all goes well at the vets.
I’ve had sows spayed for ovarian cysts and all has gone well.

Thank you for all the responses! Upon further investigation on her nipple that I thought was just swollen there is definitely a hard lump underneath it ☹️. I’m assuming that they could just perform the spay and remove the tumor during the same operation? i’m going to try to do everything I can but unfortunately, I don’t have a ton of money to spend on vet bills right now. Is surgery 100% necessary or are there other options that might be less expensive?

Could the crusty nipples and behavioral stuff be a symptom of the mammary tumor rather than ovarian cysts? Or could the ovarian cysts have caused the tumor?
