Can you over feed a guinea pig. I am quite anxious about the two guinea pigs I have left, after losing my other guinea pig and bunny within a week. They look quite healthy and fit, but they really do eat quite a lot. I think one of them may be constipated, was looking at his rear end and he seems to have a big lump of poo stuck waiting to come out, sorry to be so descriptive but its the only way to describe it. They do eat rather a lot and wondered if I am over feeding them.

your guinea pig could be impacted, i would suggest taking him to the vet for a check up. i have learnt here that the best way to feed piggies is with 2-3 servings of veggies, and unlimited pellets and hay. weigh your piggies at least once a week and keep a record. don't know if you have ever heard of dr harry cooper an aussie vet but he said he has never met a full guinea pig in his 35 years as a vet. i am no expert on males as i keep girls but perhaps give him so water via syringe to help loosen his poops. if you feed your piggies 2-3 servings of veggies a day and unlimited pellets and hay they should be fine. wishing you well with your piggies. and so sorry you lost a piggy and bunny 0:) 0:) 0:) and welcome to the forums from me and the girls from oz! :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: take your little fur baby to the vet and get him checked out, in health and illness there is a thread of recomended vets have a look and hopefully there is one near you! if not try PM maryh or one of the moderators they will be able to help you! good luck and welcome again. hugs and cuddles :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: my girls send your boys :-* :-* :-*

Bananas can cause constipation - are they having lots of good quality hay? I'm sure someone else will be able to help out who knows a lot about constipation!

This sounds like impaction, fairly common in older boars. You will need to gently squeeze the lump out,and check at least once a day for more build up.Sometimes the problem will resolve itself, but the impaction can often occur for the rest of the gps life.

Impaction is caused by slack muscles so there is not much you can do about it.

Constipation normally occurs in gps who do not drink enough or do not eat enough hay and dried grass.

Constipation causes small dry pellets.

Yes, piggies are greedy little things, and if you feed them too much, can easily pile on the weight...

I have to agree it does sound like impaction...there are varying degrees, which vary how many times a day you will need to help him...

Thanks for your suggestions. I cleared him out by gently pushing next to the lump and loads of poo came out and them some healthy looking ones came out. It was all nice and clear this morning. Have got back from work and he looks impacted again. I think I will change my hay supplier, I usually get it in a big potato sack from the fruit and vegetable shop, but I think I will buy some Timothy hay which I have seen in Wilkinsons.
