I wasn’t quite sure where to put this post but I suppose here works. As some of you will know if you’ve been following my bambi’s buddy thread, my guinea pig Bambi is searching for a friend again, he’s been to the rescue this week and rejected 5 guinea pigs. My problem with him is that he is majorly over grooming, I’ll insert some pictures. I assume this is because he’s bored and lonely but I’m not sure how to make this better until he finds a friend. Any advice would be helpful

I'd pop him along to the vets and have him checked for skin problems... when our lovely floof Jezebel had mild fur mites a couple of weeks a go she was much less sociable and relaxed, really quite skittish- maybe he has a minor skin issue thats making him feel irritable and spoiling his boar dates? He needs to be on top form and in a very good mood to find a friend!

It’s all of his side really, I don’t think it’s mange, he’s had that a few years ago and he has no sores or dandruff, his skin looks pretty good, I suspect that because he’s alone and bored as it only really became apparent when I went on holidays and my mother was looking after him and didn’t get him out of the cage but it’s probably a good idea to take him to the vets and check, if he does I don’t want to infect the whole rescue with mites

Hi!

Please always make sure that it is not skin parasites like mange mites, which can pop up in times of stress (i.e. bereavement).

There is not much you can do if it is overgrooming except wait. The good news is that Bambi is not grooming down to the skin, so a parasite issue is less likely. The hair will grow back once he stops - hopefully as soon as he has a new friend and provided that friend is not barbering him short at first.
