Overgrown nails

I recently Brough a Guinea pig of a lady on Facebook and having brought him home have noticed his nails are majorly overgrown. I am unsure on how to cut them as so long and the dreaded black nails too. I have booked him in vet Wednesday to get them trimmed but do you think they will be able to cut all in one go short? Or have to cut bit by bit? Thank you

Hi and :wel: to our friendly forum!

They are a bit overgrown! They must be terribly uncomfortable for poor little piggie! The vet will probably have a go at cutting them all at once. Then your piggie will be a lot more comfy. :)

I usually cut them myself but never had to in this state so wouldn't dare try. So vets Wednesday for him

He is at vets Wednesday so hopefully they can sort it. poor things been left so long by looks of it, I'd do them myself but 1. Never cut overgrown nails and 2. They black nails so worried to cut quick. And his names chomp

What a cutie.

You are definitely right to get the vet to do this. I keep on top of my girls' nails but they are light coloured and never that bad!

I usually do all my piggies I've cut nails myself this was a piggy got of Facebook and sadly came in this state :( I am not used to black nails myself so think will always be a vet job when need trimming or a trained groomer
 
He's about 3 years old so my guess is in thay time previous owner didn't cut them at all :(
 
Sorry to hear about this.
I cut both my Finn and Lara's nails often, but very little at a time so as not to hurt them. I haven't drawn any blood so far while cutting their nails.

The vet will be ale to tell you how to cut it so I would recommend you try to learn from the vet so you can cut it at home.
When you feel you need more help, we are all here for you.

Have you seen a nail cutting scissors like this one at a local pet shop? This is the one I use.

He’s lovely and lucky to have found a good home with you.
I always take mine to the vet nurse for a nail trim - I’m too wimpish to do it myself.
The get will soon sort Chomp out.

They are the worst i have seen. How could anyone let this happen? Well I'm glad he has you now. Show us a pic of his new nails soon
 
Our fat lady Jezebel who lived in a hamster cage for 2 years had bad nails when we got her obviously and they are still growing thick and gnarly looking 3 months later... vet trip definitely but I don't know if yucky nails will always be a bit problematic? My other piggies need a nail trim too but Jezzy's are just nasty looking, going to ask our vet on sunday (not sure if here patchy bum fur is related to grooming herself with these horrible talons!) but if I hear anything useful from the vet I will update everyone!
 
Lara was unwanted by a friend so I was appointed as Laura's pet parent. This friend already knows I have a lot of pets. Long story short, when Lara came to live with me, her nails were pretty close to being circular due to never getting them cut. Lara resisted to nail cutting in the beginning because she never got her nails done before, so I got help by getting someone to hold her while I worked on curing her nails.

She now gets her nails cut regularly and does fine with it. She gets treats after her regular nail appointments. :xd:
 
Chomp is a fab name!
