Yesterday we traveled with my daughter's guinea pig, Peanut, and because of eclipse traffic he got too hot. We immediately did everything we could with what water we had and fanned him. He seemed to do slightly better initially, but I could tell he wasn't well once we made it home. This afternoon he has eye crusties and I know someone said that's what theirs did just before he passed! I'm so worried and feeling so incredibly guilty! Does this sound like something that is part of the process of his body shutting down? My 9 year old is a mess and more worried than me! I know no one can say FOR SURE and the vet is probably the best option, but I am at work now and just can't stand to not get someone's thoughts. Any thing would be appreciated!

It could be the start of an upper respiratory infection, do you have access to a vet that will treat guinea pigs? How is his breathing? is he eating ok?

I'm sorry to hear this.

I think the crusty eyes is more an indication that they are not well enough to keep themselves clean than a direct indication that the body is shutting down - but I'm not an expert. Hopefully now he's home, he will start to perk up.

Just tagging @Wiebke to see if she has any suggestions

He does need to see a vet asap though if he's not right.

I think so, I'll call her to double check that she accepts them...
His breathing was slightly fast this morning before I left, I had my brother check on him an h our ago and he said the same. He didn't seem to be eating really, but he was drinking water on his own last night, which I THOUGHT was a great sign, but Idk now.

That's what I was so afraid of. We both cried last night and I just told her to be prepared for the worst, but she blames herself for wanting travel with him, and now I am also for allowing it. I had no idea that the heat affected them the way I now know. He's such an awesome guinea pig and she's very attached. She's so great about getting him out and playing with him every single day.... Peanut is not one that just sits in a cage and forgotten about, which is why she wanted to take him with us overnight. Thanks so much. I'll call our vet here and see if she accepts Guineas...

Welcome to the forum, sorry it is when you are feeling all stressed out. Your appointment is today? I presume you are from US looking at your IP address. Hope all goes well, try and feed him a little cucumber that will hydrate and cool him. Will Check back on the thread for updates, love and healing vibes to Peanut

I took Peanut to the vet and had him checked and even did xrays on the little guy. His lungs looked very bad and we got antibiotics for him. Gave him a dose yesterday and gave him fluids through a syringe periodically until bedtime. I told my daughter to hold him for a while and give him lots of kisses and tell him she loved him. I'm glad I did because unfortunately he passed through the night. Thanks everyone for the advice and concern, it's more appreciated than you know....

I am really sorry for the loss of Peanut. So sad. Huge hugs

I'm sorry to hear that. They are such delicate creatures that can go downhill so very quickly. You did all you could and at least Peanut is not suffering x

so sad... and I am sure the traffic jam and the hot were only a coincidence. Maybe your piggie was already ill and the stress of the journey only got the things worsened so fast. It is not your fault...
hugs!
