Overweight or Underweight

I would be careful with carrot as can cause liver problems. I can give my 3 one carrot per week!(Small carrot).

How funny is this... I think my pigs 100% get better fed than me!

Laura can I ask how much of each veg you feed per pig? Obviously not the above but for instance, If I feed pepper I read somewere I should give 100grams of each veg this sounds like alot per pig? What do you think?

10g is the usual weight of veg, if you wanted to be specific. It adds up to a lot even just then. 100g would be a piggies idea of a heavenly salad, admittedly. :))

I just throw their salad together so they each get a handful of mixed veg a day. Slice of pepper, one tomato, half a babycorn, 1cm chunk of apple etc. In terms of leafy veg - either half or one full leaf of lettuce, 2-3 sprigs of parsley etc. I give them as much coriander each as I can as this is their only staple veg that they are fed every day regardless of weekly menu changes. They usually get a full 80g packet of coriander between all 12 pigs.

I gave them a little pepper at lunch time today and mabey a little more at dinner as a gave them a few slices. At dinner would it be fine to give them so carrot as they have had that before or should I give them a little celery which they have not tried before?

I'd stick with just the one new food for now, just to make sure their tummies are used to the pepper before introducing a new food. Celery is unlikely to upset them but it's better to just let them have 2-3 days to get used to having pepper once or twice a day, then try adding something new. :)

Re the carrot, if given in excess for a long time it can lead to problem due to high levels of Vit A, but a small chunk a day is fine if mixed in with lots of other veg. Variety, moderation. As SRH's pigs are used to carrot, I'd be reluctant to have it reduced too much in the diet until a wider variety of veg are the norm.

So much conflicting info, I spent years being confused by it all. Ironically, the more laid back you are about the diet the easier it is to get it "right"! (Not that there is a right or wrong...the point is they get their veg!)

10grams per veg, per pig... so in my case 30grams Red Pepper?

Sounds about right. I did find that 10g adds up to a lot though with some foods (especially leafy ones), so you might like to drop some foods to 5g. The Ratewatchers diet is good for pointing out which ones can be reduced without affecting the overall ratio.

For their dinner would this be fine: A little more pepper and three small chunks of carrot (one each!). For breakfast in the morning: Some more pepper and a little celery?

Thank you for all the help on this thread.:)

Thanks Laura I have the guinea lynx calculator on hand and I'm working out a diet without gassy foods lmao! It is all so confusing!

Sounds good to me! Laura? :))

P.s. Laura bet you wished you stayed off the forum today lmao!:red

I know Joanne, you'd think feeding pigs would be the easiest thing of all their care! Once I'd accepted that variety and moderation was key, I just have the veg lists I wrote up on my fridge and pick out 2/3 high calcium veg and 2/3 low calcium veg and think nothing more!

That sounds good, as long as their poops are still normal in the morning and they are enjoying the pepper, you can either give just pepper and celery, or carrot as well so they have something they're very well used to mixed in there.

LOL I wasn't sure if I was up to using my mind for anything useful today but all this has warmed my brain up nicely. :))

It's ok. I am sure Sorrel, Rosemary and Hazel would say thank you if I asked them. They really enjoyed their pepper!
