I am feeling fed up today, and also concerned for a guinea who has come to the hotel today. he comes to me 3 maybe 4 times a year, but the last time he came to me with his cage mate, he was a normal guinea, now he is so obese and i think just to to big, how can i educate the owners that it is not good he is this big, he lost his cage mate October time, I was shocked at the transformation of him, he looks awful

Its feels as so they are giving him food to comfort eat,

Hmmm. Difficult one. The only way I can really see is dropping hints into conversation. Like asking how much their pig weighs, how much he eats, or just comment that 'wow, he's piled the weight on since last time'...not subtle, but might do the trick!

I agree I think that is a very tactful way of doing it......maybe you can modify his diet while he is staying with you....how long have you got him for ?

Have you weighed him? I would be very interested to know what weight is considered obese and what sort of foods can pile the weight on. I am a little concerned about Larry as he has recently put weight on but I dont know if he is too fat or just healthily chunky :-\ David is bringing the scales over at the weekend and we are going to weigh them all and compare.

I agree, just get straight to the point but in the nicest way possible,
I'm sure they would appreciate your concern O0

I think you should (tactfully) just come right out and say it to them - after all your only looking out for the welfare of the piggy. If they'd went to the vets with him they would be quick enough and tellling them straight. Its maybe not a nice thing to do but perhaps they're not aware that he's too chubby - its often quite hard for owners to tell that/or admit that about their own animals. O0

he weighs in a 3lb not to heavy as guineas go but since he was such a tiddler when i last had him , i was honestly gob smacked at how big he was when he came back, Its just the amount he has put on his such a short space of time

was thinking about this earlier......like you said with it being such a short time is it def just weight gain or could there be something physically wrong with him ?

Do you think maybe in the past he was just underfed?

Maybe they didnt make sure he always had mix? We know guineas need to always have food available, amyeb he never did before? As there was another piggy, maybe he didnt have as much dinner as he wanted, or the other piggy only let him have a little bit? Or maybe they are still feeding for 2?

yes i have wondered this, still feeding for 2, they always have mix when they stay with me but hardly touch it, i was wondereing if the other one died of being to overweight, as when i had him i did say to them on pick up i was concerned about him, I couldn't put my finger on what was wrong , but you know when you just know there is something wrong,(god that was long winded sorry) ;D

Anyway they said he had been back about a week and he died, she said he was acting strange about 4ish and was dead by 5.30, she said it happened so qickly :(
