Hi :)

Just wondering if this brand is available in the UK? Oxbow make a great cavy food. There is Cavy Cuisine (timothy based) for adult piggies and Cavy Performance (alfalfa based) for young piggies.

I work as a pet nutritionist here in Canada, and we sell (and recommend) Oxbow products for all small animals. I feed Oxbow to my piggies. It's a little more expensive than some other products, but it's well worth it (in my opinion!).

What do others think?

Keira

Hi Keira i can buy it in OZ too, yes it's expensive but it's one of the best products around for piggies !
I fed the Cavy Cuisine to my older boy Duke and he adored it, it's also really good for ailing piggies too, you can make it mushy with pre cooled water and then feed via syringe or off a small spoon.
Really interested to hear that you're a pet nutrionist i'm sure your valuable advice will be appreciated by us all :)

Yes, it is available in UK. Some vets and pet shops stock it, but mostly it's quite widely available online now. Price-wise it isn't too terrible actually - but then I do buy in bulk! I pay £27 for 10kg of Science Selective, a UK brand. I can get two 4.5kg bags of Oxbow (total 9kg) for the same price - something I only found out the other day and which continues to surprise me! I am considering trying my ten on it again; last time I fed it was 4 years ago and none of the pigs were particularly keen, but now I only have one pig left from that long ago. In effect I have nine newbies to test it out on!

I feed Oxbow hay though, exclusively (i.e. no other hay). I love the quality, as do the pigs.

I'm a bit of an Oxbow fan. I feed Oxbow timothy hay, and do feed the Cavy Cuisine too. My lot aren't mad on it, and I've recently acquiesced into giving them some less healthy stuff in with it too, as I've got a thin piggy who needs to keep eating/interested in food.

CCC4, do you want some CC to try out with them? I've got loads here.

I used Cavy Cuisine for quite a while as it was recommended for piggies with bladder problems (not alfalfa based therefore calcium to phosphorus ratio better). However, I had to go back to Excel nuggets as I added a new baby to my group and CC is not recommended for youngsters. When she is old enough I will go back to it. Out of choice, they prefer Excel, but will all eat CC (I offer a little sometimes as a change).

I also feed Oxbow Timothy Hay along with meadow hay as bedding. They absolutely love it and it smells gorgeous!

My lot love Cavy Cuisine, we also switched over when a couple of the group were having bladder stone issues. I mix it with a little P@H nuggets to make it go a little further, but they happily eat both. I also buy Oxbow hay as a treat, my main supply is meadow hay from a local farmer, but I like to give the gang a bit of variety.:)

Mine love Cavy Cuisine & Performance for the younger ones.

I get it at my vet's office for $12 for a 10lb bag, where the big pet store charges $13 for a 5lb bag....its ridiculous. rolleyes Its not any more expensive than the crap that the local pet store sells.

I pay £27 for 10kg of Science Selective, a UK brand.

I buy my Science Selective on-line at £22.99 for 10kg. Obviously you have to add delivery charge of £4.49 (I think) but I usually buy other items at the same time.

I have tried Oxbow but mine seemed to prefer Science Selective. However, I would think that Cavy Performance is great for pregnant sows and babies.
