Oxbow Oat Hay Or Orchard Grass?

Thanks guys. I'm guessing the oxbow is more of a topper hay? What main hay do you both use?

I use 50% Oxbow Orchard Grass, 50% organic alpine meadow hay I source from Germany. I top up with a bit Green Oats or alfalfa hay or herbal forages like strawberry leaves or chamomile, but just a bit once weekly.

Orchard grass is like a piggy drug. Ours love it and go wild for it

My poor piggies have never had it. I feel awful! I saw it on pets at home website so went the other night but they didn't have it in store so I've ordered some online!

lol dont feel awful... Be prepared for orchard grass madness

mine :luv: orchard grass, and frendship oat grass.you will have trouble getting piggies to eat run of the mill hay after they have tried orchard grass !:lol!:

Would feed both as treats, orchard grass and readigrasses where horrendous for crunchies bladder issues (although they loved it!), but then this coukd have just been a one off! Oat hay of all kinds is usually well recieved by piggies, but its low fibre content means its not great for a general hay, but good for a treat!

My pigs actually prefer a brand of (much cheaper) organic alpine meadow hay from Germany. But I mix it with Orchardgrass, because I suspect the meadow hay is too rich with lots of legumes and herbs. I used to provide a hay rack with Orchardgrass and a hay rack with meadow hay, and the meadow hay always disappeared in a few hours, so I now resorted to mixing them.

Hay for Pets INGS is my favourite - here is a link to their new website ...

Hi :) mind don't seem as fussed on the stalky hay. Is the INGS hay stalky? What's the different between the INGS hay and Timothy? Sorry for all the questions....hay still confuses me after all this time! Lol x

Timothy is the name of a particular type of grass - so, Timothy hay is made from Timothy grass.

I think Ings is more of a brand name (?)

From what I understand from the website , ‘Ings’ hay comes from traditionally managed water meadows and is a mixture of a variety of flowers and grasses .

Thank you. So is INGS meadow hay? Do u know if it's less stalky? Mine like oxbow Timothy, but I purchased Timothy hay from timothyhay.co.uk and mine don't like it, it's very stalky and not soft (not sure if their hay is usually like this. I don't think they had the best batch last year so maybe that's why). So I'm on the hunt for a softer hay with a nice greenish colour and sweet smell. My last bale from my local equestrian place was lovely and my piggies adored it, but the new bale I got is again more stalky and not as green :( X

I think it's fair to say INGs is comparable to meadow hay. It's always different when I get it . The last batch was soft - but, sometimes it can be stalky . The last batch I got was lovely and green - I couldn't help but say "delicious" when I opened the packaging To be honest, it sounds like your 1st choice should be your local equestrian place.

I have just received the sample pack of three hays from them and my boys LOVE the INGS hay too! It smells so sweet and was quite green too! They also like the meadow one but will not touch the Timothy one which doesn't surprise me I have tried several stalky Timothy hays now and they hate them all! But I'm going to order the INGS and meadow hay today I have never seen my lads as enthusiastic as they were with this hay :D
